Millinocket Welcome Sign Project

If you've driven into Millinocket recently from East Millinocket, you may have noticed a new sign welcoming you to town. This project was the work of dedicated local residents in collaboration with artist, Laura Manzo. Local residents noticed that the old sign was getting faded and that the vinyl sticker lettering was cracked and peeling, making it impossible to repair. The panel itself was also rotting at the top. They got permission from the Town and put a plan in motion to replace the sign. They contacted local artist, Laura Manzo, and asked if she would be interested in designing and painting a new sign. She was excited to get started! With an ambitious goal of having the new sign in place before the Fourth of July, Laura worked diligently to finish it. On Friday, July 3rd, the old sign was taken down and replaced with the beautiful new one, which features a detailed painting of Katahdin.

About the Artist

Laura Manzo is an artist and graphic design instructor based in Maine’s Katahdin Region. Her work blends creativity, community, and a love for the outdoors, often taking shape in unexpected ways. Whether in the classroom or the studio, she’s passionate about making art accessible, hands-on, and rooted in place.

Boat Registration Stickers are available at the Town Office.

ATV Registration Stickers are only available for NEW registrations at the Town Office; Online Re-Registrations are available to residents until stickers are received.

Reminder that Delinquent tax payments were due as of March 13, 2026. Any balance owed is accruing interest and may be subject to lien. Contact the Tax Collector at 723-7000 to inquire about if you have a balance.

Public Works Department

The Public Works crew has been busy tackling spring's challenges and keeping our town running smoothly. Here's what we've been up to:

Around Town:

• Completed sidewalk edging and roadside loaming of Katahdin Ave. and Highland Ave. This entailed adding loam, grass seed, and biodegradable erosion control matting to promote grass growth
• Repaired a sewer basin on Oxford St. by rebuilding the top layers of brick
• Continued painting crosswalks and traffic signals on town streets
• Assisted in Fourth of July parade preparation by placing and retrieving barricades along the parade route and cleaning the sidewalk along Penobscot Ave.
• Cleaned out a plugged storm drain line between Wassau St. and Washington St.
• Rebuilt the burn pit at the transfer station
• Repaired rusted section of the sand shed roofing material along with plywood and stringers
• Cold patched potholes throughout town
• Began cleaning storm drains of accumulated winter sand

Transfer Station News:

• There have been multiple items found in the brush pile that do not belong there. Lumber, furniture, and any items containing metal cannot be disposed of in the brush pile. Brush and tree waste only.
• 55 tons of wood ash have been hauled to Juniper Ridge Landfill
• Important Disposal Reminder: Any refrigerator or freezer brought to the transfer station must be completely empty, and all grates, trays, or compartments must be removed before disposal
• Contractor Request: The contractor who grinds the brush has asked that nothing longer than 8 feet be brought to our brush pile, as longer items can clog the grinder
• As always, we are eagerly accepting all your cardboard, plastic jugs, and tin cans for recycling. Every bit helps us keep waste out of the landfill!

Cemetery Update:

• Please note that small, thin-style grave markers or footstones pose a hazard to mowing operations. Markers that simply lay on the ground and are not recessed into the ground are subject to being struck and damaged during normal mowing operations. That style of marker is not allowed in the cemetery without a proper base. This included the bronze style VA markers.
• Burials are underway for the season as well as routine grounds maintenance
• Greenthumb applied a second application of fertilizer
• With the large number of obstacles to maintain around, we ask that discretion is used when placing items on gravesites. No loose rocks or marbles are allowed and will be removed immediately. Other small items that pose a danger for lawn maintenance will also be removed. No items may have wires or ropes securing them to the ground.
