Every business that is operating today began from a dream. Some people have had the dream to own a business their entire life; others dreamed the dream once they lost control of their life. But, every business owner dreamed the dream.
The business ownership dream is a dream for control, stability, financial freedom, leadership, influence and legacy. Some (Entrepreneurs) want to blaze their own trail while others (Franchisees) prefer to walk on a guided trail. Some have millions to invest; others piece their dream together on a credit card. Some want to do something inspirational; others simply want the outcome. No matter how the dream is brought to life, the dream must be fueled by a strong, powerful motivated why.
A business is a living, breathing, dynamic thing. A business that is owned by a non-dreamer who is not internally motivated by his own strong, powerful why will die. Businesses do not fail; owners do. The clarity of our dreams and our ability to keep dreaming no matter the present reality determines the success of the business; therefore, the magic truly is in our dreams.
No one sets out to struggle, but some do. No one sets out to fail, but many will. Why? It is simple really. They lose sight of their dream, or they stop dreaming. When business ownership gets real, it can get hard really fast. When our brains move into survival mode, we stop dreaming. Our brains perceive fear through adrenaline. When adrenaline is coursing through our veins from a real or an imagined threat, our brain does not know the difference. If the brain is perceiving a threat, it cannot expend energy to create. The dream is on hold while the brain and body work to survive the threat. If an owner stays in a fearful state of mind for too long, they will never live the life they were dreaming of. While they may blame their failure on something outside of themselves, the truth is, they were the creators of that failure by their failure to dream.
If you want to live the life of your dreams as a business owner, you must discipline your mind to focus on your dreams. You must stay out of survival mode. Sometimes, this requires that you ignore the present reality. I know that sounds crazy, but if you stare at reality that differs from your dream for too long, how can you create your dream? We only get what we think about, so if you want to create something different than your current reality, you should think about something different. To create something magical, something that inspires your heart, you have to discipline yourself to focus on what you know to be true in your heart not what you see if you what you see is not what you are dreaming about.
Christmas is a time of magic because we dream about the baby born in a manger 2000 years ago. We dream about the hope that that baby brought to the world, and we open our hearts to that hope. If we keep the spirit of Christmas alive in our hearts all year long, our businesses will be filled with that same hope and magic.
My Christmas wish for you, my fellow business owners, is to dream big, bold, inspired dreams, and to live every day knowing that if your heart is open, your dreams hold all the power, and you can achieve anything you desire in your life.
God bless you, your families and your businesses this holiday season.
