Consider Magnolias

Why plant a Magnolia?
Let's start with their irresistible beauty. The luscious flowers announce the end of winter, emerging from furry buds that were set the previous fall. Flowers can be 6" in diameter, sometimes even larger. Blooms come in a variety of colors from rich purple to pastel pink to yellow.

Magnolias are believed to be the earliest known flowering plant, with their fossils dating back over 100 million years. Magnolia trees even existed before bees, so they rely on beetles for pollination. Instead of nectar, the flowers produce large quantities of pollen that the beetles use for food.

Magnolias are very sturdy trees. They are deer, pest and disease resistant. Magnolias provide shade to the garden with their spreading canopy of broad leaves. Ours are underplanted with hellebores that are often blooming at the same time. Lovely!

Here are some of the varieties we have in stock. Stroll our selection on this sunny day!

Here is another great illustration from the Morton Arboretum on proper planting. It is important that the base of the roots either from a pot or
a balled and burlaped plant is on a firm base. Loose soil under the base will compact with the weight of the plant and watering. The plant will sink and the flare at the base of the trunk will sit below soil grade.
This will kill your plant over time.

We provide a planting guide with each tree and shrub purchase.

Tree experts agree. Gateway staff agrees. This method of mulching
on the left is a slow but certain death to a tree.
Why do we see so many trees mulched this way?

Well, some companies want to sell mulch, and lots of it. To be gracious, maybe some companies do not know the proper technique for mulching.
Your landscape beds may be ankle deep in mulch.
Think about how do trees grow in their natural habitat.
This is the landscape you want to duplicate.
