ADVOCATING FOR PLAY-BASED EARLY EDUCATION FOR CHILDREN EVERYWHERE.

Hello, hello--

"I think that I shall never see a poem as lovely as a tree..."

This poem by Joyce Kilmer was introduced to me in the second grade by a poetry loving teacher who encouraged us recite every week. The words themselves tell such a story of the magic of trees that they were a natural introduction to our October newsletter. Here in Texas, we don't often get to enjoy the multicolor of so many other places in the world as trees experience their own "circle of life", but the trees themselves are still an important part of the landscape in many parts of the state.

What tree memories do you have? Do you remember the first time you climbed a tree? Were there trees in your yard that made piles of leaves...to either jump in, rake up or both? Did you picnic under a tree with childhood friends or family members? Were you encouraged to identify leaves, make bark rubbings or pick up sticks to create dolls or other natural sculptures? So many play opportunities in, under and around trees.

Enjoy these October days with a nod to the trees around you or to the memories about them.

Here is an article about forest schools...nothing says "trees" more than a forest! Even though an actual forest setting may not be a possibility for you or your program, what kinds of forest related items can you bring to the outdoor or indoor play spaces around you?

Inspire My Play is one of our favorite sites--they have beautiful play tools and suggestions. Here is a recent blog about autumn activities.

Here is a fun nature walk idea, especially for toddlers from Ashley at Relatable Motherhood. You can find her on Instagram at @heyitsashleynicole along with these outdoor toddler activities.

A Love for Trees

by Dr. Beverly Alford

As the leaves begin to turn and autumn starts to peek around the corner I find myself reflecting deeply on my father, who recently completed his earthly journey. His love for trees was magical—one of the many things that defined him—and reminds me of the joy he found in nature.

STANDING ON THE SHOULDERS

When we think of "standing on the shoulders", it is important to realize that there are those among us and in front of us who are important and influential. That is one reason a conference like the International Play Association (IPA) Conference is a big part of our own growth and development, as well as a networking opportunity to spend time with like-minded folks who "get" us. The idea of play is deep and has varied descriptions and characteristics so that we can say "I believe in play" in a room full of others and still learn from and develop discourse with new thoughts and opinions coming to pass.

The 2024 IPA Conference in Greenville, SC last week was not exactly as expected but it was definitely exciting! The conference leadership did an exemplary job of making the best of a tough situation. We commented regularly on the kindness, friendliness and helpfulness of everyone we met. We started the first day with a session and pictures about lovely centers and schools in Scotland--including getting to hear from the owner and facilitator of so much wonderful outdoor play. Next was a session on the value of play and the importance of not rushing childhood from Two Pushy Dames--who wouldn't love to hear from these delightful and energetic presenters! They generously provided their slides and information to all in attendance. Closing the day was a session from Fair Play for Kids on screens and digital play which provided so much enlightenment regarding what really is happening in those "educational" or "teacher approved" games and apps. Check out their website, Fair Play for Kids, or more information and many free resources! With the hurricane making landfall shortly after the afternoon ended, the sessions on Friday were cancelled and we hunkered down for that big event! We were without power for only about 14 hours in our hotel and were able to make our flights to come home...but the whole area is left in such a sad state. Prayers, thoughts and well wishes are ongoing for all those in that part of the world as they heroically make it through the coming days.

WE WANT TO KNOW!
