"Say NO to Mid-Term Redistricting" Day of Action!
Saturday, October 4, 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm
Braden River Library, 4915 53rd Ave E, Bradenton, FL 34203
| | |
The Florida state legislature is contemplating an unprecedented effort to redraw the state's Congressional maps in the middle of the decade with no new Census numbers to justify the effort. The redistricting is part of a larger, national effort to secure a partisan advantage in Congress. The League of Women Voters of Florida was one of the primary supporters of the Fair Districts amendments in 2010, so let’s do all we can to defend that work now.
Join us for one or all of these fun and constructive activities to pressure our legislators to say no to mid-term redistricting.
-
Write postcards or letters to state legislators
- Create protest signs and/or pick up a League of Women Voters of Manatee County (LWV-MC) yard sign
- Learn how to maximize use of the 5 Calls App, an easy and effective way to reach out to elected representatives.
-
Have drinks and refreshments and brainstorm even more ways to call attention to and stop this power grab!

On October 28, 1886, the Statue of Liberty was dedicated. To commemorate this event and its meaning to our nation and the world, we focus this month on the theme:
Celebrating Freedom with Lady Liberty
Read about:

- Unite and Rise for Democracy - a rally to celebrate democracy
- What our November rally speakers bring to our celebration of democracy
| | Long May She Be a Beacon of Enlightenment | | |
The words from the Emma Lazarus poem “The New Colossus” appear on a plaque at the base of Lady Liberty and welcome wayfarers to our nation’s shores. Officially titled “Liberty Enlightening the World,” she has been a symbol of universal freedom and democracy. Gifted to us by France in honor of our shared democratic values and in recognition of the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States, she has stood in New York Harbor since the late 1880s. Read more about the history of Lady Liberty: Sentinel by Francesca Viano.
As we commemorate the dedication of the Statue of Liberty, let us recommit to being a beacon of light to all. Let us act to uphold our constitution and the rule of law. Let us unite and rise for democracy!

Calling all Eagle Eyes! The Communication Corps is creating a flock of Eagle Eyes to assist with proofreading our newsletters. Our Managing Editor, Linda Long, would send you the draft newsletter with a checklist of what to look for and you would return the proofed copy to her with feedback within 48 hours. We would check with you in advance to see if your schedule permits you to commit to this task in a given month. We are looking for a good number of proofreaders so that we can spread the work; you won’t be asked to do this every month. Easy, peasy and a nice way to contribute to the important work of the LWV-MC. No credentials are required, but this task might especially appeal to those who have experience with some form of editing: teachers, attorneys, corporate staff, administrative assistants, parents who have helped their kids with assignments. All willing Eagle Eyes are welcome to fly with us. Please ask questions or respond in the affirmative to Barb Ehren (Barbara.ehren@gmail.com), Communication Corps Lead, by October 31.
Calling all Veterans! LWV-MC would like to honor our member Veterans next month for Veterans Day. Please let us know who you are, including the branch you served in and any other information you care to share, via email to Social@LWVManatee.org
