Happy New Year!
As we launch another new and exciting year, we reflect and celebrate the many accomplishments of our Manning School of Business community. In this edition of the Manning Experience newsletter, you will find a collection of quick reads that update you on our research, academic programs, co-curricular activities, and new initiatives we have implemented or expanded over the past year. We are excited about our continued growth in experiential learning, interdisciplinary collaborations, scholarship, thought leadership, alumni participation, and corporate engagement.
I hope you find inspiration in the collaborative efforts of our alumni, faculty, staff, and partners. Working together, we help our students build solid foundations and give them a platform to launch their careers.

Career Connected Work & Experiential Learning
|
Manning School of Business students have many opportunities to connect what they learn in the classroom to the workplace. Through co-ops, internships, student employment, and entrepreneurial competitions, our students explore their interests, learn how to find solutions to real world problems, and prepare for successful careers.

Finalist student teams pitched their cutting-edge financial and banking ideas at the 10th annual DCU/Manning School of Business Innovation Contest. The top team was Solar Crowdfund, a platform that would enable people to invest in large-scale solar projects to help combat climate change.

Manning School of Business students Joe Dunn, Alex Condes de Bethencourt Lopez, Jose Munoz and Jack Weafer, along with Visiting Faculty Lecturer Jeremy Ramsey (Marketing, Entrepreneurship & Innovation) attended the Northeast Intercollegiate Sales Competition (NISC) at Bryant University in Smithfield, Rhode Island. This was the first year a UMass Lowell team attended the two-day event, which brought together more than 250 students from 27 colleges and universities from across the country.

Accounting faculty in the Manning School of Business are finding new ways to attract students to the field, from incorporating data analytics into the curriculum to teaching fundamentals through a game of “Monopoly Accounting.”

Four Manning School of Business students attended the annual Student Managed Investment Fund Consortium Conference in Chicago, where they learned about portfolio management and investment strategies from industry experts and networked with peers from across the country. Adjunct faculty member Daniele Parravano (Marketing, Entrepreneurship & Innovation) accompanied Manning School of Business students Matthew Almeida, and Anirban Dasgupta, Olivia Hebert and Wilton Ortega.

A dozen Manning School of Business students shared their entrepreneurial ideas and networked with students from across the region at the Harvard Innovation Labs’ Cross-University Mixer.

Accounting students Amy Bu, Ervin Caushi, Eunice Clifton and Gillian Inglis worked as interns last spring with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) grant program, an Internal Revenue Service initiative that supports free tax preparation services for the underserved.

Students in the New Product Development course taught by Dr. Denise Dunlap, Associate Professor (Marketing, Entrepreneurship & Innovation) received first-hand experience in product pitches at this mock trade show event.

A Manning School of Business team made up of students Matt Conte, Anirban Dasgupta, Yeaharne Hout, Tooney Benny and Thomas Stranberg finished in top 8% of the 2021 Bloomberg Trading Challenge. Student teams from around the globe participated in the seven-week university investment competition, using Bloomberg terminals to define market assumptions, develop a return-generating strategy, and execute trades. The team's faculty advisor was Carolyn Kedersha, Visiting Faculty Lecturer (Finance).

Adam Klionsky, director of communications for Major League Soccer’s New England Revolution, shared advice for breaking into the professional sports industry to more than 100 Manning School of Business students during a recent visit to Alumni Memorial Library Center.

The Manning School of Business Accounting Department celebrated 11 recent scholarship recipients during a networking luncheon, where students met with alumni from the accounting profession.

Responding to industry needs for more analytics talent, the university added the data-driven field to this year’s Accounting, Finance and Analytics Career Fair at University Crossing. Recent Manning School of Business alumni from Dell Technologies, quality engineer Jack McDonough ’20 and senior analyst Christie Phelan ’20, were two of the many alumni employers who participated in the career fair. Jack met with Manning business analytics students earlier in the day for a special workshop on supply chain issues.

The Donahue Center for Business Ethics & Social Responsibility welcomed Cindi Bigelow, President and CEO of Bigelow Tea, for a discussion on leadership and insights from her career journey. The event was co-sponsored by the Manning School of Business, Joy Tong Women in Business, and the Office of Alumni Relations.

Five Manning School of Business students credit their fall co-op experience at MFS Investment Management with giving them new perspectives on the finance industry while building skills that will give them a solid foundation as they embark on their careers. Lena Astarjian, Zachary Mizioch, Nicole Resendes, Christopher Sheng and Philecia Smith-Rise worked in a wide range of roles at MFS, including generating requests for proposals, compliance education, ensuring data integrity, and social media marketing.

College Collaborations and Growth

Our alumni and intra-university collaborations continue to help us grow our programs, increase interdisciplinary initiatives, and advise us in new ways to extend our reach for optimal student impact.

Riva Chatsman, a third-year accounting student, was one of three UMass Lowell students across various disciplines chosen to attend the United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP27) climate summit in Egypt in November. The trip was sponsored by the Rist Institute for Sustainability and Energy.

This River Hawk Scholars Academy (RHSA) initiative supports job-minded juniors. Manning School of Business College-Based Advisor Carol Towle '22 helped develop the program for first-generation students with Associate Director of Career Services Serwa Addae-Adoo and RHSA Director Matthew Hurwitz.

The Manning School of Business’ Global Entrepreneurship Exchange (GE2) virtual summer workshop drew 530 students from 20 countries, culminating in a 13-team venture pitch competition.

A record 479 students received MBAs from the Manning School of Business this spring, including longtime UMass Lowell philanthropist Brian Rist ’77, '22 (H).

Brian Rist ’77, and his wife Kim, donated $3 million to the Manning School of Business to create UMass Lowell's first endowed deanship. Dean Sandra Richtermeyer was named the inaugural dean for the endowment, which helps students struggling with financial hardship to stay in school. The endowment also connects Manning School of Business students with a vast array of industry services and opportunities.

Dr. William Johnson, Associate Professor (Finance) and Dr. Jack M. Wilson, President-Emeritus and Distinguished Professor at University of Massachusetts, engaged in a respectful debate on the pros and cons of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology during an event hosted by the Global Entrepreneurship Exchange (GE2) and the Jack M. Wilson Center for Entrepreneurship.

Dr. Michael Ciuchta, Associate Professor (Marketing, Entrepreneurship & Innovation) received a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award to research the Spanish entrepreneurial ecosystem while teaching at a university in Madrid.

As guest editor for the MIT Sloan Management Review “Future of the Workforce” Big Ideas research initiative, Dr. Elizabeth Altman, Associate Professor (Management) explores workforce ecosystems. The research has led to a forthcoming book, “Workforce Ecosystems: Reaching Strategic Goals with People, Partners and Technologies.”

Manning School of Business doctoral student and adjunct faculty William Zhou (Entrepreneurship concentration) received a $12,000 graduate fellowship from the Rist Institute for Sustainability and Energy for his research study on how a company’s transition to a more sustainable way of doing business, known as the corporate green transition, affects its innovation.

Dr. Elizabeth Altman, Associate Professor of Management, co-chaired the conference and moderated the keynote discussion with outgoing UMass Lowell Chancellor Jacqueline Moloney, who founded the event seven years ago.
