The monthly Payton Community Meeting is a brief and informative opportunity to hear what is going on at school directly from our principal. The meetings start at 6PM. They are generally held on the first Tuesday of every month, but always check the monthly calendar (at right) in case the schedule has changed. At press time, this year's meeting schedule is as follows: 9/6, 10/4, 11/1, 12/6, 1/9, 2/7, 3/7, 4/4, 5/2, 6/6

All meetings are held in the Library.

fop fundraising is

a year-round effort

1. Mail a check payable to FOP at 1034 N. Wells St., Chicago, IL 60610

2. Drop a check into the FOP box in the school office. Make it payable to FOP.

3. Contribute online via credit card by clicking the donate button on Payton's homepage. All contributions are tax deductible and all amounts are equally appreciated.

lsc meetings are
 open, next is 3/14

Parents, guardians, and the public are welcome at Local School Council (LSC) meetings, which are held monthly in the Payton Library at 6PM.

The LSC is an elected body that has three main responsibilities: School Budget, Continuous Improvement Work Plan, and Principal Evaluation, Retention and Selection.

All are welcome to attend and to make comments during the "Public Comments" portion of the meeting.

 Grizzly support for Jonathan Annicks
Last spring, Jonathan Annicks ('16) stepped out from his home to get his phone charger from the family car. Without reason, warning, or provocation, he was shot by an unknown man and is now paralyzed from the chest down. Jonathan is known to his friends and fellow Grizzlies as an adventurous, physically active guy who loves the Blackhawks (he coached youth hockey), and loves school - he is now attending DePaul University.

The Payton community has joined the effort to insure he has what he needs to face this challenge by contributing to an online crowd-sourced medical fund, the goal of which is to secure continuing medical care, physiotherapy, rehabilitative therapy, medical equipment, and other necessities to Jonathan's recovery. Please consider participating in the effort by visiting Friends of Jonathan Annicks to make a donation.
two more ways to
stay current

Check the school website periodically (some people set a reminder on their calendars to do this once or twice a week) at www.wpcp.org.

Two other ways to keep up on what's happening at school are to watch the PNN (Payton News Network) OR check Advisory Announcements.

You can also subscribe to receive the announcements via email or RSS.
check grades & attendance online

ParentConnection is a secure online portal for sharing classroom attendance and grades between teachers, students, and parents and guardians.

To activate a student on your ParentConnection account you must obtain the student personal identification number (PIN), which you can do on this web page on the Payton site.

Once you have obtained the PIN you will be able to complete the application process. If you experience any problems while looking up a PIN, please email

when your student is sick or absent  for another reason
To report your student's absence you must submit a written note, available on the website under the Parents drop down menu. Or you may click here for  Reason For Absence Note. Student absences will remain unexcused until a signed Reason For Absence Note is submitted to the Office.

A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
All the News That's Fit to Print

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Second semester is well underway and Payton is replete with activity:

* Faculty are implementing their problem-based learning units in classes during 3rd quarter;
* Sweetness Day is Mar. 3, wherein all students and faculty (and a sizeable number of parent volunteers...thank you!) will engage in a day of service;
*Winter sports are in playoff their seasons and, for the first time, Payton hosted the IHSA Boy's Basketball Regional Playoff game in our new gymnasium;
* The Parent-Teen Conference will be this Saturday at 1PM;
* Payton students and faculty created and hosted the Chicago Gender Equality for Teens Conference at Payton. It was well-attended and had a terrific range of presentations and workshops;
* We will be welcoming the incoming freshman class of 2021 at our Admitted Student's Night in mid-March. It looks to be a wonderful assortment of dynamic minds that will join us.
* Programming season begins next week. Please be on the look-out for an email from me that will include guidance on thinking about course selection with your student(s) and logistics and due dates. It is important that you have active and real conversations with your child(ren) about finding a challenging but doable array of courses. Please do not leave this important decision-making to your child alone. Yes, our students tend to be quite bright and capable but they still need guidance and input from you (we're Walter Payton College Preparatory High School...not Walter Payton University). We are excited about offering a wonderful assortment of courses, including some new courses.
* We will implement Start with Hello Week starting Mar. 6. It is a national program geared towards helping students feel more connected with others and, as such, to minimize isolation, bullying, violence, and depression. We're excited to bring it to Payton as another element of hastening the social and emotional development of our kids.
*            ...and on and on.

Amidst this there continues to be no budget resolution in Springfield. Our CPS CEO, Forrest Claypool, said in late-February that, if the budget gap is not closed soon, then he may need to end the school year on or around Jun. 1.  We do not know if that will come to fruition. The CPS has filed a lawsuit against the state for inequitable funding practices and has asked a Chancery court to tend to the matter in short order. Hopefully there is favorable resolution in Springfield and/or in court and elsewhere. If any alterations to the school calendar come, we will certainly make appropriate adjustments and announce them to students and parents/guardians in short order. We will continue to use our voice to nudge resolution to funding and associated issues.

I look forward to seeing you at the Gala on March 31st!

Go Grizzlies!

STUDENT ENGAGEMENT
Parent-Teen Conference:
Two Workshops, One Powerful Afternoon

Dr. Erica Bauer, Director of Student Engagement

I am excited to share with you two amazing opportunities to connect with the Payton parent community! These opportunities were created in response to an expressed need for more parent supports. The first is the Parent-Teen Conference on Sat., Mar. 4 from 1-3:30PM. Click here for a preview! (*Times displayed in the video should read 1:00PM - 3:30PM)

The second is We are Payton Parents: Mental Health on Wed., Mar. 15 from 6:30PM - 7:30PM. I look forward to seeing you there!

The Parent-Teen Conference was developed by students for parents to promote understanding and create better parent-student dialogue. So please leave your students at home and join us on Sat., Mar. 4 from 1PM - 3:30PM. Workshop #1 is 1PM - 2:15PM | Workshop #2 is 2:30PM - 3:30PM. The workshops are different, so consider joining us for one or both.

Third quarter's We are Payton Parents session is Wed., Mar. 15 from 6:30PM - 7:30PM. The topic will be about adolescent mental health and will feature a speaker from the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI). We also will have a parent who volunteers with NAMI share her story about raising a teen with bipolar disorder.

Music & Art News

From the Band Room: CPS Band Festival is in a few short weeks, Sat. Mar. 25. The Festival is free and open to the public and held at Mather High School, 5835 N. Lincoln Ave. We are waiting for the performance schedule from the CPS Fine Arts Office - Payton has requested a morning performance slot. Please note that this is one of the three required performances for the Concert Band.

From the Choir Room: Congratulations to the Payton Concert Choir for receiving a rating of Superior (the top honor in this competition) at the Joliet West Choir Contest last month. They competed against 14 suburban choirs. In addition, they walked away with the trophy for the most outstanding bass section! The competition was well organized and offered each choir a coaching session with one of the two collegiate judges. The judges' feedback was glowing and really made the experience worthwhile. Special thanks to Todd Ginsberg and Gilda Valentino for giving us their day as chaperones and cheering squad.

Auditions for 2017-2018 Concert Choir: Auditions will be held Feb. 27- Mar. 2. They are earlier this year so that students will have the flexibility to apply for Payton international travel. Please remember that audition results do not guarantee placement in the course. All high school requirements must be met and the course must fit in the student schedule.

Auditions for 2017-2018 Intermediate Choir: Auditions will be held in late March. Beginning choir students interested in continuing in choir should audition. As with concert choir, passing the audition is only the first step in the process and does not guarantee placement in the course. Graduation requirements must be met and the scheduler will place eligible students in the course during programming.

CABARET: Don't miss it. . . . Mar. 22 - 25. All shows at 6PM with a special Sat. matinee at 2PM. Please join us for this thoughtful and thrilling production.

From the Dance Studio: Dance I and II students will be going to the Alvin Ailey student matinee at the Auditorium Theatre on Thur. Mar. 23. Students will receive a permission slip and information on chaperoning. If you are interested in joining us, please complete the chaperone form (included with the student permission form) or contact Ms. Marnice Lewis (Arts) at mlewis65@cps.edu.

From the Art Room: The Illinois High School Art Exhibition celebrates and rewards the artistic talents of high school art students. The show was held last weekend and featured student artwork, an art college recruitment fair, guest speakers, and scholarship awards. Congratulations go to Payton Seniors Sam Algas, Victoria Chan, Brian Gatewood, Mikayla McIlrath, Victoria Rodriguez, and Avery Williams for their artworks. Congratulations also go to sophomores Veronica Gibson, Mendy Kong, Christine Piolet, and Fannie Liang (frosh), for their artworks selected for the General Exhibition.
