The Disability Rights Education & Defense Fund
Parent Meeting
|
The Community Advisory Committee of San Joaquin County Office of Education alongside Jody Burriss, MUSD Coordinator of Special Education, hosted a training and information session on understanding disability rights open to families and community of MUSD.
The San Joaquin Special Education Local Plan assures free and appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment, to students in need. Parent education and informational meetings allow the opportunity to build communication, share resources, and improve knowledge about special education rights for those who support children with special needs. Disability rights are civil rights.

French Camp Students Visit Levi's Stadium
|
French Camp eighth graders visited Levi's Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers, to explore engineering and design in the stadium’s interactive learning STEAM platforms.
The challenge was to redesign the current football helmet and formulate a newer, more innovative design with a focus on increased safety. Students took into consideration the different needs of every position on the field and in the end, voted on the best design.
This experience supports current classroom concepts such as understanding science, technology, engineering and math, and aligns to grade level standards such as critical thinking, problem solving, and communication.

When Smoke Goes High, We Go Low
|
The Manteca Fire Department hosted fire safety assemblies at MUSD elementary schools this month to teach students how to stay safe in a situation where there could be fire or smoke.
The Firefighters performed an original song and dance that turned crowd favorite called, “smoke goes high, we go low,” to help students remember to crawl toward a safe exit in the event of a fire.
The comedic assembly caught students laughing, chanting, and engaged but most importantly, learning about fire safety and other life-threatening emergencies.
The City of Manteca Fire Department staff demonstrated how to safely exit a home at the sound of a smoke detector, explained the differences between a 911 emergency and non-emergency situation, and even shared that Fire Station #2 offers free life-jacket and bike helmet rentals for families.

Omegaman Teaches Anti-Bullying at Mossdale
|
On January 30th, Omegaman and Friends delivered their unique anti-bullying and character development assembly to the students of Mossdale, connecting to students through a Superhero theme. Omegaman performed mixed feats of superhero strength such as breaking a wooden baseball bat over his knee, bending a piece of metal rod with his teeth, and ripping a ‘book of bad choices’ in half.
Students were encouraged to be “Dream Makers” not “Dream Breakers.” They learned how to identify, respond, and prevent bullying in their school. Omegaman also reminded students that it is important to report bullying by being an upstander not a bystander. Students learned how they can all be “heroes” by following the H.E.R.O. way – Helping Everyone Respect Others.
