COMPANY / PROJECT UPDATES

The Colonel Daniel Marr Clubhouse Gets a New Roof

Since opening its doors in Savin Hill on July 4, 1974, the Colonel Daniel Marr Clubhouse at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester (BGCD) has welcomed thousands of Dorchester’s children and families. While the club has expanded over the years to include two additional facilities, the Marr Clubhouse has stood the test of time - 50 years to be exact! - and played host to swimming, basketball, floor hockey and countless educational and enrichment programs.

As chance would have it, January 2024 began with a major roof leak, and the Clubhouse roof was found to be at risk. Hence, the pool was closed, and it was determined by Engineers that ice buildup and many years of exposure to pool moisture and chemicals had corroded the roof covering the pool and the joists supporting the 50 ft. x 90 ft. structure.

Fortunately, the Marr team literally came to the rescue under the leadership of Dave Hughes, who spearheaded a full team effort.

Shoring Division

Hillside Stables Milton, MA

Located in the Blue Hills Reservation in Milton, Hillside Stables is a full-service equestrian boarding facility that was built over 150 years ago. The two-story antique barn is currently undergoing structural renovation that preserves its historical elements, including original windows and wooden hay chutes. During the first phase of the renovation, Marr installed shoring to support the replacement of walls, columns, and footings. Steel beams were used to shore up the structure's outer walls and multiple interior wood beams on the first and second levels. Marr had to carefully install its shoring components around the structure's historical elements. All wood-bearing columns and posts used to separate the horse stalls will be refurbished and reinstalled. Additional shoring will be added during phase two of the project. Customer: Northern Contracting.

Aerial Lifts Division

Rafi Properties Somerville, MA

At Rafi Properties, a 43,200 square-foot, three-story life sciences facility in Somerville, Marr was tasked by Shawmut Design & Construction with installing three suspended scaffolds in an area with significant egress challenges. With inadequate lower roof access, it was determined that tradespeople would need to access the platforms from the building’s upper roof (which also contains the roof rigging). To accomplish this, the roof rigging was set back a distance and at a height so as to provide space for the platforms to elevate, lower and swing out safely over the building edge. Use of a specialty trolley on the rigging beams helped make this challenging and a-typical procedure safe and effective. The swing stages will be used by tradespeople for at least two months.

Marr Crane & Rigging

Elevator Division

Harvard's Enterprise Research Campus Allston, MA

Harvard University's Enterprise Research Campus (ERC) in Allston, MA, involves transforming a former industrial rail yard into a vibrant, mixed-use community. Marr Crane & Rigging will manage three crucial construction hoist projects for Consigli Construction within the ERC Development. These include installing twin Alimak hoists for the hotel and high-rise buildings and a single Alimak construction hoist for the mid-rise building. Additionally, Marr has been awarded a separate twin hoist project for Turner Construction within the ERC Development.

These projects will commence in 2024 and extend into 2025. Designed with extensive community engagement, Harvard's ERC aims to be a cornerstone of innovation in Allston and a center for business and research. The project includes significant investments in affordable housing, public open spaces, and sustainable infrastructure to enhance the quality of life for Allston residents. Marr is proud to contribute to this large-scale project.

Isaac Blair & Company

149 Sidney St. Cambridge, MA

At a two-story brick building located in MIT's Cambridge neighborhood, Isaac Blair shored three interior columns for footing replacements. Marr Genie lifts were used to install the 1,000 lb., 18 ft. long steel beams into place to secure the three areas. Customer: Commodore Builders.

Safety

Best Practices to Beat the Summer Heat

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), extreme heat is the deadliest form of severe weather, causing twice as many fatalities annually as tornadoes and hurricanes combined. Outdoor workers are especially susceptible to heat-related illnesses in affected regions.

NWS uses a heat index to classify environmental heat into four categories:

Caution 80°F – 90°F / Extreme Caution 91°F – 103°F / Danger 103°F – 124°F / Extreme Danger 126°F or higher

To protect our field crews during the hot summer months, it is crucial that everyone is knowledgeable of heat illness symptoms, methods to prevent illness, and procedures to follow if symptoms occur.
