APRIL 2023

The Maternal Health Big Picture

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently reported concerning data regarding maternal health outcomes in our country: maternal deaths spiked in 2021, almost a 40% increase since 2019. Seeing such a staggering increase can be alarming and make maternal health stakeholders take pause, examine the data and factors and ask, "What needs to change?"

The fact is, so many are working tirelessly to change these horrific experiences: educating the community, hosting workshops and webinars to increase support and knowledge, applying learned skills in avoiding implicit and explicit bias, and working to the point of exhaustion and burnout.

While the new data is heartbreaking, it reaffirms that maternal health's overarching need has not changed: women and birthing people are still dying from preventable maternal health-related causes and People of Color continue to be more adversely affected than their white counterparts.

April gives us Minority Health Month, National Public Health Week, April 3-9, and Black Maternal Health Week (BMHW) which was pioneered by Black Mamas Matter Alliance, April 11-17.

Everyday is an opportunity to reexamine the maternal health big picture and remember the importance of this work. Keep fighting for change! This BMHW consider attending a local or virtual event and follow #BMHW23.

Resources & Opportunities

Systems Integration Tool

Technical workforce skills and evidence-based strategies are not necessarily sufficient to move the needle on maternal health outcomes; contextual factors such as challenging political environments, lack of leadership support, funding insufficiency, staff turnover, and historically inequitable programs and outcomes also influence the ability of MHIs and RMOMs to make an impact. These systems thinking and mapping tools provide opportunities to see your work in the context of the ‘big picture’ and strengthen collaboration within agencies and across sectors.
