TRUSTEES CORNER

Concord Township has an incredible sense of community. We see this in our interactions with residents, the way people help one another and the welcoming feeling we experience at our many community events. One of the most important goals as trustees is to ensure the safety and well being of the residents in our vibrant township community.

This is one of the many reasons we are proud to feature our Community Liaison, Sergeant Jerrold Infalvi in this issue of Grapevine. As a lifelong Lake County resident, Sergeant Infalvi grew up in Perry and attended Perry High School. He definitely found his calling early in life beginning with his role as a lifeguard at the outdoor YMCA and then his involvement as an EMT and paramedic with the fire department. At 19, he became a corrections officer and has worked in public safety ever since in the roles of dispatch, road patrol, detective, school resource officer (Riverside High School) and Sergeant.

The Community Liaison role was created when Sheriff Leonbruno along with the township trustees saw the need for a more in depth relationship within the community and schools. “Sergeant Infalvi was the perfect fit for this position. He is a leader in this community and is driven to always improve it. He cares deeply about the residents and wants to continue to make this a great place to live and raise a family,” said Sheriff Leonbruno.

As Community Liaison, the sergeant is responsible for security at community events such as Concord Community Days, St. Gabriel Festival and many more. Community outreach like attending neighborhood Home Owner’s Association meetings, block parties and picnics is critical to keeping in touch with the community needs and finding out what the Sheriff’s office can do for the residents. He teaches “Block Watch” classes in neighborhoods to train residents about safety and security. He also holds “Safety Towns” for children in the community and also supervises the Explorers Program for our community youth (ages 16-19). This program is so successful it acts as the “farm team” for new hires for the department. In fact, Infalvi stated, “Two of our new graduates have been hired on in various positions and it is projected that two additional graduates will begin their career in law enforcement in the near future. The program gives these teens the opportunity to do ride alongs, shadow, help with events and even help tend to minor injuries.”

In his role, Infalvi also collaborates with the fire chief and works with many different community organizations to help improve our community. You can read more about Sergeant Inflavi here.

If you would like to initiate a Block Watch in your neighborhood, set up a Safety Town for the neighborhood kids, or if you would just like to invite him to your neighborhood picnic and share a hotdog with him, reach out to Sergeant Infalvi soon! He is a great guy and he’d love to meet you. His summer is booking up fast though so get in touch soon! You can also follow the Sheriff’s Dept. on social media and download their app with important up to date information (See below.)

Morgan McIntosh, Concord Trustee commented, “Concord Township is very fortunate to have Sergeant Infalvi as our Community Liaison. He truly wants to make our community safer and more prosperous by serving and protecting all of our residents.”

FIRE DEPARTMENT

Fire Department 1948

Concord Township Fire Dept. 1948

When Concord Township Fire Department formed in 1948, its first volunteer firefighters had little or no formal firefighting training and received no pay, except for $1 per year to cover worker’s compensation cost. The first appointed fire officers were Fire Chief Ernie Spear, Assistant Fire Chief Cliff Webster and Secretary/Treasurer Bob Welk.

Firefighters were “dispatched” via a call on telephone party lines, at times with firefighter’s wives making calls and by a civil defense siren mounted on a telephone pole. If a volunteer heard the siren, they would report to the station and look at the blackboard, mounted on the front of the station, where the fire chief noted the location of the call. The volunteer fire chief and a part time firefighter on weekdays were the first to staff the fire station. In 1962, Bob Welk became the first full time paid Fire Chief and 2 full time paid firefighters were hired.

As the Township continued to grow and calls for service increased the Township took action, hiring additional paid part-time and full time firefighters, and eventually adding paramedics. The struggle to provide adequate staffing to meet Concord Township’s needs has not changed over the course of the department’s 75-year history.

Since 1948, over 300 firefighters have served Concord Township. In 2022, our mix of 48 part time and full time firefighters responded to 3,004 calls. We look forward to the next phase of our history as we move into the new Fire Station #1 and hope you will join us during our 75th Anniversary celebration.

ZONING DEPARTMENT

With spring fast approaching, residents will soon be thinking about home improvement projects, renovations or other additions to their home or property.

Please keep in mind that a zoning permit is required from Concord Township prior to constructing any structures on your property. For example, the following projects are required to have zoning approval: building additions, structural alterations, decks, accessory buildings, swimming pools, fences, and other accessory structures including gazebos and pavilions. Such buildings or structures must be built in compliance with size and height restrictions, as well as front, side and rear yard clearance requirements, as specified in the Township Zoning Resolution. In addition, if there is a stream on your property, the structure may be required to be located a minimum of 25 feet from the stream’s ordinary high water mark. This is referred to as a “riparian setback”.

Visit the Zoning Department page for additional information regarding permit requirements.
