Good Government Monthly Newsletter Issue #3 May 2025

“Democracy is the worst form of government,

except for all the others that have been tried.”

—Winston Churchill

In this month's newsletter we're sharing our upcoming episodes, but also the message of solutions oriented service and accountability.

We have Mayor Matt Tuerk from Allentown PA presiding over one the fastest growing cities in the country. Mayors Ginther and Garner both talk about local solutions based approaches to problems that aren't any farther away than your nearest pothole, waste collection, or water treatment plant.

Former Head of the National Weather Service, Louis Uccellini, discusses the public services that we might take for granted, until they're gone, and Phil Brock re-established just how important solving the housing crisis is.

These guests are not only taking on the hard problems, they're being accountable. This shouldn't be newsworthy, but it is becoming increasingly important for local and regional governments to take on the problems that the federal government seems too wrapped up in politicizing than solving!

May 2025 episodes

Allentown, PA Mayor Matt Tuerk on Parking, The Iron Pigs and Smart Growth for a rapidly growing city.

The mayor got a parking ticket and happily paid it. This shouldn't be news but, in this day and age, proving no one is above the law, even on small infractions, is a good thing. Listen as Mayor of Allentown, Pa talks parking and baseball and how he’s managing smart growth in a city that’s rapidly expanding.

Listen

Louis Uccellini, The former head of the National Weather Service

The National Weather service provides all of us with the most accurate weather forecast available. When you turn on local news, there are making their predictions largely on what they learned by looking at data from the National Weather Service. Listen as Dr Louis Uccellini former director of the Weather Service explains their mission.

There's more than meets the eye in beautiful Santa Monica CA

When you think of what a city on the Pacific Ocean in Southern California looks like, chance are you are thinking of Santa Monica. Meet former Mayor Phil Brock, who served in city government and continues to be his city’s booster. Listen to what’s going on in this beachfront city where the city motto is Fortunate City in a Fortunate Land. Sounds like Santa Monica to me.

Lastly, we found this interesting in the cognitive dissonance part of our brains. It seems everything has been called into question. Even settled science. Well here, from the CDC website, are what they consider their greatest Public Health Achievements from the last century. Each one of these items on the below list will come with a report on the data that supports their claim. The first report in this series focuses on vaccination, which has resulted in the eradication of smallpox; elimination of poliomyelitis in the Americas; and control of measles, rubella, tetanus, diphtheria, Haemophilus influenzae type b, and other infectious diseases in the United States and other parts of the world. Unassailable. Real. Facts.

Ten Great Public Health Achievements -- United States, 1900-1999

During the 20th century, the health and life expectancy of persons residing in the United States improved dramatically. Since 1900, the average lifespan of persons in the United States has lengthened by greater than 30 years; 25 years of this gain are attributable to advances in public health.

Many notable public health achievements have occurred during the 1900s, and other accomplishments could have been selected for the list. The choices for topics for this list were based on the opportunity for prevention and the impact on death, illness, and disability in the United States and are not ranked by order of importance.

Ten Great Public Health Achievements -- United States, 1900-1999
