Dear Shaker Resident,
Today, a large, fast-moving fire on the roof of Fernway Elementary School caused significant damage to the building, but thankfully, no injuries or loss of life.
Thanks to the swift action of the first responders from the Shaker Heights Fire and Police departments, along with mutual aid from departments as far away as Lake County, the fire was extinguished safely and quickly. Crews will remain on scene to ensure that all hotspots are fully extinguished and the building is secure.
In the coming days, an investigation into the cause of the fire and an assessment of damage to the structure will take place. School district officials will then determine a contingency plan for the coming school year.
In a community as close knit as Shaker Heights, damage to a beloved elementary school is felt deeply by everyone. In the midst of the crisis, I saw an outpouring of concern for the building staff, the first responders, and for neighbors and young residents who were filled with emotion at what they were witnessing. It was a hard day, but we are fortunate to live in a caring community where support can be found around every corner.
Lastly, on behalf of City Council, I would like to express deep gratitude to the Shaker Heights Fire Fighters and Police Officers, and to the many departments providing mutual aid, for their hard work in a difficult and dangerous situation. Thank you.
