LINGO: Fiduciary Duty

Fiduciary duty is the legal responsibility to act solely in the best interest of another party. “Fiduciary” means trust, and a person with a fiduciary duty has a legal obligation to maintain that trust. Realtors (and Lawyers, Trustees, Guardians for example), are obligated by a canon of ethics to be a fiduciary on behalf of the client. It is the highest level of care that could be imposed by the law.

HOME MAINTENANCE: To Leaf or not to Leaf

You may have seen your neighbors trying out a new trend of not raking their leaves to the curb. Fall cleanup is indeed a labor of love. Hours of raking. The noise and exhaust from leaf blowers is annoying, and soon could be illegal (read more). Is this leaf-trend better for your lawn? Could it give you more time to relax in the fall? Here are the benefits we discovered::

  • Natural mulch: Leaves act as a natural mulch, providing insulation to the grass and soil beneath, helping to retain moisture and regulate temperature. This can protect your grass from extreme cold and temperature fluctuations.
  • Nutrient recycling: As leaves break down, they release nutrients into the soil. These nutrients can benefit your grass and promote healthier growth in the spring.
  • Habitat for beneficial organisms: Leaves left on the ground create a habitat for various insects, earthworms, and microorganisms. These creatures help aerate the soil, decompose organic matter, and support a healthier ecosystem in your lawn.
  • Erosion prevention: Leaf cover can help prevent soil erosion by shielding the ground from rain and wind, reducing the loss of valuable topsoil.
  • Reduced yard waste: Allowing leaves to remain on your lawn over the winter can save you time and effort in collecting and disposing of them, as well as reducing the need for plastic bags and other waste.
  • Cost savings: By avoiding the need for excessive raking, bagging, or mulching, you can save money on lawn care and yard maintenance.

As with everything, there is a balance. A thick layer of leaves can smother your grass if it's too dense, so consider mulching or mowing the leaves into smaller pieces to aid in decomposition. Additionally, in areas with heavy leaf drop, it may be necessary to rake or collect excess leaves to prevent lawn damage.

DESIGN ALERT: Thanksgiving Decor

Thanksgiving week! Are you ready? This Thursday we will gather, eat, and give thanks. Take a look at some of our favorite Thanksgiving tablescapes for inspiration. Peruse these ideas & make your home feel oh so cozy for the holiday. Send us pictures of your holiday tables!

For those of you with little turkies, we love the idea of craft paper as the table cloth at the kid's table. Let them color their own placemats, write their names; anything to keep them busy while the big turkies enjoy conversation and their labor of getting the meal to the table!

FALL RECIPE: Spicy Butternut Squash Pasta

This time of year is the best for comfort food recipes, so instead of a restaurant spotlight we decided to switch it up this month! This butternut squash pasta recipe is a team favorite. Feel free to generously add parmesan or throw in some sage to make it extra delicious. Make it vegetarian, gluten-free, or as described here for full flavor, it is a winner!

CLEVELAND ARCHITECTURE: Squire's Castle

The castle, that was never a castle. Chances are if you’ve seen an image this time of year of a Cleveland castle surrounded by foliage, it’s what is known as Squire's Castle. Located in the Chagrin Valley and part of the Cleveland Metroparks, it is a local attraction for nature and architecture enthusiasts, photographers and hikers.

When built, the intention was for it to be the gatekeeper's house to a larger estate for Standard Oil executive and English-born Feargus B. Squire. He lived at 2533 Fairmount Blvd in Cleveland Heights, but wanted a country retreat reminiscent of the English manors of his youth. He had grand plans for his 525 acres but it never came to fruition. Instead, Squire stayed in the building a few times, using it as a country escape before selling the property to a developer in 1922. If you visit the castle today, all of the walls, beams, window glass, and woodwork have been removed along with part of the second and third floors.  A rustic shell even if not a castle!
