Medical Society of Tulare and Kings Counties monthly news & updates
Greetings to all Medical Society Members.

The staff here at the Medical Society of Tulare and King Counties are anxiously awaiting the summer to come to an end and welcome in the last half of our year.

The first 6 months of 2019, Physician Wellness was our focus. We brought you a wonderful speaker, Steven Seay, to discuss with you key ways to help you manage the stresses of your day to day. We truly believe in the work that you as physicians do and what you can do to help the people of our communities. But we also believe that because of the demands of your job, you forget how to take care of yourself. We are committed to help you in any way possible to alleviate some of that burden.

The last 2 months, we have been tirelessly working on our new 2019-2020 Membership and Resource Directory. It should be distributed to you this month. We hope that you find the information useful to both you and your staff.

The last half of this year, not to abandon the focus of Physician Wellness, we are also striving to increase our membership. Combining last year with the members of the Kings County Medical Society our membership has grown, but we want to continue to grow. We are constantly looking for new physicians to introduce our Medical Society to. A new member looks to you, established members, for that leadership and that introduction. Please be mindful of fellow physicians that we can bring the benefits of the Medical Society and CMA to.

We thank you all for the hard work and diligence you provide to our communities. We look forward to seeing you at our next Medical Society event.

CalHealthCares Awards to Pay $58.6 Million in Loans for 247 Physicians who Commit to Serve Medi-Cal
SACRAMENTO –  Physicians for a Healthy California (PHC) announced a commitment to pay off $58.6 million in student loans for 247 physicians under a new program created to expand access to care for Medi-Cal patients.

Nearly 1,300 health care providers applied to the CalHealthCares loan repayment program, which pays up to $300,000 in debt relief in exchange for meeting certain criteria such as maintaining a patient caseload of at least 30%of Medi-Cal patients, being in good standing with state licensing boards, and other service time obligations.

The awards are intended to improve access to care for low-income patients by creating economic incentives for physicians and dentists to provide care to Medi-Cal beneficiaries. Awards for dental applicants will be announced later this summer.

Out of the 247 grants awarded, Tulare and Kings Counties has 4 physicians being awarded

CMA Strategic Planning
Orange County Medical Association hosted the CMA Strategic Planning Session this year. They welcomed all Medical Society Executive Boards across California to meet with CultureSync and CMA to help set CMA's strategies for the upcoming years.
The California Medical Association (CMA) often surveys physicians on critical issues facing our state, the medical profession and our organization. CMA is in the process of developing a new strategic plan to guide our work over the next few years. Both health care and CMA itself have seen a lot of change in the years since our last strategic plan was completed in 2011. A new strategic plan will help CMA organize its work in a way that best positions us to meet our strategic priorities.

CMA is asking its physician members to contribute to this process. Over the next few days, members will receive an e-mail with a unique survey link to provide input that will help inform the new strategic plan.

We urge you to participate in this short survey to help shape CMA’s future.
Are you retiring or you know a physician retiring?
Our office here at the Medical Society have been receiving many phone calls regarding patient records. If you are planning to retire soon or know of a physician that is retiring, please let the Medical Society know where your records will be held. We would love to be of help to your patients in trying to retrieve those records and give them any direction on where to go from there.

What is the proper way to terminate the physician-patient relationship?
There are numerous reasons why a physician may terminate the physician-patient relationship. Physicians, however, should be aware of potential liability, including for patient abandonment, if the relationship is not properly terminated.
