The 1983 NC State Wolfpack: Faith in the Face of Giants

One of the most inspiring and memorable Final Four stories I haven encountered comes from the 1983 NC State Wolfpack, coached by Hall of Fame coach Jim Valvano. This team, widely considered an underdog, captured the hearts of the nation when they defied all odds to win the national championship. They faced the mighty Houston Cougars—nicknamed "Phi Slama Jama"—led by future NBA stars Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler, in what was expected to be a lopsided contest. Yet, NC State won 54-52 in dramatic fashion on a last-second dunk. It remains one of the most improbable upsets in NCAA history.

Spiritual Lessons and Biblical Parallels

David vs. Goliath (1 Samuel 17)

The comparison is unmistakable. Just as young David stood against the giant Goliath, armed not with

superior weaponry but with faith in the Lord, so too did NC State enter the court against overwhelming

odds. David declared, “The battle is the Lord’s” (1 Samuel 17:47), and in a similar spirit, NC State played

with bold confidence, refusing to be defined by their limitations.

Persevering Grace

John Wesley emphasized the role of prevenient grace—God working ahead of us, preparing the way. NC

State’s journey was not a single game, but a long path through difficult victories that required

persistence and trust. Their story mirrors the Christian walk, which is marked by perseverance in grace,

reliance on God’s strength, and hope even in the darkest valleys.

Hope that Does Not Disappoint (Romans 5:3-5)

Paul writes: “We rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance

produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame.” NC State's team endured hardship, injuries, and setbacks. Yet, their endurance built character, and their character fueled hope—a hope that culminated in victory. This echoes the Christian journey, where trials refine our faith and deepen our trust in God.

Unity of the Body (1 Corinthians 12:12-27)

The Wolfpack’s strength wasn’t in individual stardom but in their unity as a team. This is reminiscent of

Paul’s image of the Church as the Body of Christ—many members, each with different gifts, working

together in harmony. Their teamwork and sacrificial play beautifully illustrate what the Church is meant

to be: one body, many parts, all dependent on each other.

Encouragement for Today

Let this story remind us that in life—just like on the basketball court—victory doesn’t always go to the strongest or the most powerful, but to those who walk in faith, unity, and perseverance. In a world that prizes strength and status, we cling to the truth that God chooses the weak things of the world to shame the strong (1 Corinthians 1:27).

The 1983 NC State victory is more than just a sports story; it's a reminder of perseverance, hope, faith, and the power of unity—a living testimony to the fact that with God, all things are possible (Matthew 19:26).

Grace and peace,

Pastor Tony

Worship Service, Sunday, April 6th @ 9:30am

It's going to be another glorious time of worship as we gather around the Lord's Table for Holy Communion on Sunday, April 6th. It is such a wonderful time to gather together as a family of faith to share in this holy time together. Pastor Tony will be preaching a powerful and inspiring message entitled, "Embracing Our Cross." His message is based on Isaiah 53:3-5:

3 He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4 Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that made us whole, and with his stripes we are healed.

Supporting the theme of Christ's sacrifice for us, the Chorale will sing a marvelous new anthem by Mary McDonald entitled "Grace Upon Grace." The poignant text reminds us as children of the heavenly Father that our Savior's grace is constantly with us "no matter how far in darkness we have roamed and that His love reaches out to welcome us home." What a powerful reminder as we gather around His Holy table. During Communion, Jacquie Cruz and Gary Klarenbeek will sing the timeless "O Divine Redeemer" by Charles Gounod. This standard of the sacred repertoire was composed in 1893 and still, its powerful message of Christ's redeeming grace speaks to listeners today.

We hope to see you all on Sunday at 9:30 at Lee-Scott Academy. Bring a friend!

As we give from the heart, we sow seeds into God's kingdom. Galatians 6:9 encourages us, "And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap if we do not give up." Our giving will bring a harvest of blessings beyond what we can imagine.
