I've seen a lot of proud parents/guardians walking into the office with their Safe Environment certificates! And that's good news because you MUST complete this training in order to serve as a volunteer at our upcoming annual Walk-a-thon on Friday, September 28th.

I'm also happy to see all the volunteer forms coming in for this event, but unfortunately, we cannot assign you a volunteer task until we receive the Safe Environment certificate along with your completed CORI check form and a copy of your license. Please call the office if you have any questions.

Last night we finally finished our Parent Orientation sessions for all grades. Thank you parents and guardians for taking the time to come in and listen to the teacher presentations. Your understanding and support of classroom routines, procedures and curriculum will strengthen the partnership between home and school and will ensure the success of your child's school experience this year.

We have one more parent/guardian responsibility to finish off for the start-up for this year and that's the Back to School Night on Tuesday, September 25th from 6-7 p.m. in our gymnasium. Please put it on your calendar and we hope to see everyone there!

God's blessings,

Ms. Ann E. Dougal

Why Study History?

This is a question often asked by students.

They are finding the answers from the ideas of others, as well as their own personal experiences. When asked about important events that have helped shape their lives, the responses were enlightening. They included things like "when my baby sister was born," "I broke my arm," "meeting my best friend," and "coming to St. Michael's," to name a few.

Students then broke into groups to talk with classmates about how their pasts have helped them become who they are today, just as events from history have helped shape our world today. With this in mind, students are on their way to finding history interesting and relevant in their lives.

Presto Chango - Apples Became Sauce!

Mrs. Enderlin's PreK-4 class worked their magic today as they transformed apples into some tasty applesauce!  The best part was getting to eat the applesauce at the end!  Yummy!

Mindfulness

The Practice of Mindfulness

We are now into our second week of learning mindfulness at St. Michael's Academy. Most of the classes have practiced mindful bodies, mindful listening and mindful breathing with the use of an anchor to retain focus.

What is an anchor? Just as an anchor is used to keep a boat from drifting off, in mindfulness, an anchor helps keep thoughts from drifting into our focused mind. The students learned that in addition to sitting mindfully, when breathing mindfully, one should focus on where one mostly feels the breath, as well as thinking "breathe in, breathe out." Comments as they slowly opened their eyes were: "I feel calm." "I feel relaxed." I feel like I want a nap." "I feel sleepy now." When asked if they heard outside noises as they were breathing mindfully, almost all of the students replied that they did not! Yet, the usual hallway noises were present.

So what exactly is mindfulness?

Mindfulness means maintaining a present-moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, or surrounding environment. Or to put it another way, to notice what's happening right now in an open, balanced and curious way.  The second part of the definition is to include the intentional nurturing of positive states of mind such as kindness and compassion.  Our youngest students are working on learning kindness and empathy for themselves and others through stories, songs and movement.

Important Parent Volunteer Information!

Parent Volunteer Requirements

St. Michael's Academy welcomes all parent volunteers.  In order to volunteer at the school or chaperone a field trip, all parents must complete the Safe Environment Training as mandated by the Diocese of Springfield.

The CORI background check paperwork must be completed in the school office as well as viewing the safe environment video at home. A certificate of completion for the video will be provided at the end of the training and must be brought to the school.  A link to required information and the Virtus training video   can be found here.

If you plan to volunteer for the Walk-a-thon on Sept. 28th , the above training must be completed.  Please plan to set aside 1 1/2 hours to view the safe environment video and complete testing modules.
