From the Rector:

Beyond easy answers

Dear Friends:

The words of my favorite Summer poem – Mary Oliver’s “The Summer Day” – float into my being at some point every year when the bees are buzzing and the grass is high.

This year, the poem has come to me as I have been preparing for the memorial service for TF Moore, beloved member of St. John | San Juan and friend to many.

Usually, the phrase in this poem that playfully tumbles around in my being is “what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”

Right now, however, the phrase that rings in my ears and tugs at my heart is “Doesn’t everything die at last, and too soon?”

Indeed, TF died too soon. Too soon, and too young, and too unresolved.

We long for happy endings for our own lives and for the lives of those we love. We yearn for the sense of satisfaction that comes from fulfillment, accomplishment, completion. We also see happy endings as a sign of divine approval or blessing.

But life is complicated and God-who-loves-us knows this from their own incarnation. This God, our God, remains with us unconditionally, in and through it all, beyond this mortal life and on into eternity.

Sometimes a life ends the way most classical and popular music ends, with the final note being “the tonic.” A song written in the key of C major finishes on the note C; a song written in the key of A ends on A. Though grieving, a sense of peace mingles with our sadness.

Sometimes a life ends the way some folk music or jazz ends, on an unexpected note. When this happens, we are deprived of simple resolution and invited to awareness of unconditional interconnectedness beyond easy answers.

When things are resolved and when they’re not, may we be blessed with the courage to pay attention, to kneel, and to trust on the One who made us and who holds us, now and always.

Peace and prayers,

Janet+

The memorial service for TF will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 18, in the sanctuary at St. John | San Juan and will be live-streamed here. A reception with time for remembrances will follow in the Parish Hall.

The Summer Day

by Mary Oliver

Who made the world?

Who made the swan, and the black bear?

Who made the grasshopper?

This grasshopper, I mean —

the one who has flung herself out of the grass,

the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,

who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down —

who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.

Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.

Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.

I don't know exactly what a prayer is.

I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down

into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,

how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,

which is what I have been doing all day.

Tell me, what else should I have done?

Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?

Tell me, what is it you plan to do

with your one wild and precious life?

Parish Life

Everyone has a story

July 26 parish meeting is a chance to tell yours

Our next quarterly parish meeting is set for Sunday, July 26 in the Parish Hall after 10:30 a.m. worship.

This gathering will feature important story-sharing on "Deep Gladness and Next Good Things" led by our College for Congregational Development team: Sue Andersen, Deacon Gen Grewell, Fawn Hacker, Radigan Lander, Llewyn Merrill, Steve O'Connor, and Rev. Janet Waggoner.

If you want to participate in making progress toward our move in 2027, this is the time and place!

What do you know

about Nehemiah?

What would you like to know?

The SJSJ summer adult forum through Sunday, September 27 will be good old-fashioned Bible study on the Book of Nehemiah. Nehemiah was the Old Testament prophet who spoke words of challenge and encouragement to God's people in a time of spiritual revival and the rebuilding of Jerusalem. Join in one week or every week. Bring your Bible if you can. The study guide, Nehemiah: The Courage to Face Opposition by Don Fields, is available online through various booksellers (the newest edition has a cream-colored cover.)

See you at 9:30 a.m. on Sundays in the Parish Hall!

Wednesday 7 a.m. worship service

At the 7 a.m. Wednesday service, July 22, Rev. Janet will celebrate Holy Communion in the chapel. If you're unable to meet at the chapel, you can participate via Zoom.

The service will venerate St. Mary Magdelene, a follower of Jesus whose life was radically changed by Jesus' healing. Her ministry of service and steadfast companionship, even as a witness to the crucifixion, has, through the centuries, been an example of the faithful ministry of women to Christ.

All are welcome to these inclusive language liturgies, an excellent opportunity for spiritual connection with God and with other spiritual seekers in the middle of your week. Join by clicking the button below.

Help wanted!

SJSJ is looking for someone who is an expert at selling items online: EBay, Craig's List, Facebook Marketplace, etc., to help with a small project.

In the process of cleaning out items from various storage areas, we've found a few things, mostly old furniture left behind five years ago by the school that used to operate upstairs.

We think these items may have value and want to explore that before donating them to a local thrift store.

If you can help, please send an email to our Parish Administrator at anna@stjohnsoly.org and we'll contact you with more information.

Thank you!

Know your rights

Have you ever asked yourself, "What are my rights? What do I do if I'm stopped by the police? What if ICE comes to my house or the house of my neighbor? What are my rights to film or assist when we see an injustice being done?

We have answers. Learn about your rights before you need them at a presentation by the American Civil Liberties Union beginning at noon Sunday, July 26.

The church is located at 1625 Boulevard Rd. S.E., Olympia.

Way to go Anna!

Parish Administrator Anna Okrasinski-Maddox is among the featured artists at "Mother," an exhibition at the Thurston County Museum of Fine Arts.

“Mother” explores the complex identity of mothers, challenging societal expectations while highlighting the artistic expression found in the nuances of care-giving. Through the lens of participating artists, it casts light on the often-overlooked intersections of creativity and motherhood, showcasing works that illustrate themes of joy, pain, transformation, and resilience.

The show's opening is set from 6-9 p.m. Friday, July 24, at the museum, 120 Olympia Ave. N.E. in downtown Olympia. It will be on display through September 18.

More information on the exhibition and the museum's hours is here.

Coming up

July 28 potluck features a special guest. 6 p.m. summer BBQ with Harriet Amman, who will share her inspiring story of surviving Hitler's regime, immigrating to the United States and promoting peace and justice, compassion and kindness.
