Prophesy and Promise

Greetings!
Dear People of God:
This Sunday, March 1, will be our second anniversary of traveling together as priest and people here at St. John | San Juan. Happy Anniversary, dear people of God!
Over the past two months, as conversations about the future of our congregation deepen, several people have asked me, “If you knew then what you know now, would you have taken this job?”
I always respond without hesitation, “Yes.”
Considering the challenges we have faced over the past couple of years, and the challenges that lie ahead, you may find that quick response to be a little crazy, a little cocky, or, at the very least, naïve.
But from my perspective, this call was – and is – a “sure thing.” Why? Because of YOU. Your honesty, faithfulness, and determined trust in God signaled to me that, together, we are called do something transformative, something prophetic.
I believe having the name “St. John” is a sign of our calling to be prophets. John is the only one of Jesus’ 12 disciples who was a prophet. As recorded in the Book of Revelation, the core messages of John’s prophecies are: God’s got this. Jesus Christ triumphed over death and hell to save us. Our call as believers is to share the Good News of God’s love. Fulfilling our call will ignite transformation and bring us to Glory, in this life and the next.
Dear people of St. John | San Juan, we are called to be prophetic, to share the love of God, not only with our lips but in our lives, to embody the Good News in every place we live and work and worship.
After the 10:30 am worship service on Sunday, March 22, we will hold our next Parish Meeting, at which the Vestry and I will share next steps in our journey, our exodus from this building. Your Vestry and I don’t yet have all the answers, but we want to share with you what God has revealed to us so far and to invite you to share what God is revealing to you.
As we move more deeply into our prophetic calling, I’m drawing inspiration from modern-day prophet Joan Chittister. In her book The Time is Now: A Call to Uncommon Courage. She says:
How do we really get out of the swamp we’re in?
By confronting it.
How?
Truthfully.
But what will that take?
A model, a vision, a commitment, courage, and . . .
Annnnnd . . .? What else is needed to fix this muddled world?
YOU.
Thank you for being you. Thank you for accepting God’s call to travel together as people of prophecy and promise.
With admiration and affection,
Janet+

Today, March 1, is El Hogar Sunday:
Support The School of Love and Hope
| | |
Two students sponsored by St. John | San Juan – Alondra and Johan – are at El Hogar, The School of Love and Hope, in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. The school began as an orphanage for low-income and homeless children and now is a loving home, school and lifeline.
We support them by donating each first Sunday of the month, and we have just begun collecting toward meeting our pledge of $2,700 for the 2027 school year.
Our 2026 pledge check totaled $5,200, exceeding our pledge of $4,200 – we sent an extra $1,000 to the school to use “as needed”. The school has so many needs and we are delighted to be able to help it continue to provide such an amazing home and education for more than 250 students. We are left with $500 as seed money for our most recent pledge, which will be sent to El Hogar in February 2027.
| |
Please place your coins, cash and checks for El Hogar in the colorful offering plates to support this effort and keep Alondra, Johan and other students and staff at the school in your prayers.
