Word from the Pastor

Just a word about Stewardship. I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating:

Biblically, stewardship isn’t about fundraising, but rather a spiritual discipline that becomes a practice and way of life.

When we realize that all that we have is actually a gift from God, it is out of a spirit of gratitude and generosity that we give a portion of our time, talents, and financial resources back to God in order to further a life and ministry of love and compassion.

I have learned that one of the most important elements of good stewardship is to recognize that it’s more about our need to give than the church’s need to receive. Also, there has been a generational shift away from stewardship as a means to preserve and promote an institution within which we experience God, towards stewardship as an act of personal spiritual devotion that secondarily benefits the church and its ministries.

The theology of stewardship also serves as the church’s antidote to our age’s obsession with materialism, consumerism, and the desire to acquire more and more. As Christians, we know that people are not worth the sum of what we acquire, but are of infinite value because we are children of God – created in the image of God.

Let us all think upon these things as we prayerfully reflect upon our own way of living, spiritual disciplines, and our need to generously share our blessings with others. Even a small percentage increase of your pledge from last year will help us reach a balanced budget. Commitment Sunday is November 3, when we will receive and dedicate our pledges for next year.

Blessings, Rev. Todd

Congregation members shared a fun time of fellowship and creativity. It was great to come together for this Treat of an event. No tricking!

C is for Christmas!

Jump into Advent with your church family!

Sunday, Dec. 1 after worship

All things beloved at this very special time of year!

Chili Cook-off: please bring your personal favorite batch of chili for tasting. The group will vote on Best Chili.

Cookies: if you don’t want to bring chili, please sweeten the pot with a batch of Christmas cookies to share!

Crafts: There will be Christmas crafts to help you get your creative festivities rolling.

Children’s Christmas Eve Pageant:

All children are invited to join in the creation of the Nativity on Christmas Eve. No practice time needed. Please plan to arrive at church a little early to get a part in the scene and a costume. We will need shepherds, Angels, Mary, Joseph, a few animals, a star. Help us bring the story to life!

Children’s Church Library

Please visit the neat little book shelf in Fellowship Hall to peruse some selected books from our children’s library, which is on the 2nd floor. All the books (on the shelf and in the library) are available for borrowing. There are all sorts of lovely books, many featuring biblical stories or stories of God’s love. In addition, there is a wonderful selection of books with diverse themes and characters.

Birthday Endowment Fund

A meaningful way to celebrate this year's Birthday, is to donate an amount equal to your age to the Endowment Fund.

This donation is also a wonderful way to honor others such as children, grandchildren and friends and allows the church to have funds available for special projects.

Checks can be made payable to College Hill and marked "Birthday Fund" on the memo portion of the check.

Luncheon Club

Thursday, 11/21 ~ 11:30 am

in Fellowship Hall

Luncheon Club meets the 3rd Thursday of the month, usually in Fellowship Hall.

We will continue to have a monthly sign-up sheet (located on the kitchen door) so we know how many will be attending to help proportion food.

If anyone in the congregation would like to attend, but needs assistance with transportation, if this is something you could help with, please (click name to) contact Bryan or Clay Finckward.

Afghan Tutors:

Volunteers Needed!

Tutors are needed for the following children:

Sakhizada Family:

2 year old daughter on Sundays, 3:00-4:45pm. If you are interested, click here to contact Debbie Chase.

Momand Family:

Fatima (3rd grader) and her brother

Abdullah (5th grader)

Can you help these great kids? Tutors and the Momand family children go to the Maxwell Park Library at 3:30 on Thursdays. That’s right across Yale from their home. We work with them for about 45 minutes, then let them play for 15. For more information, please contact Johnna Thurston or Kathy Evanson. Thank you for considering helping our Afghan neighbors!

Afghan Bread Sales

Over the past year, one of the Afghan wives has made bread that the Team is selling in Fellowship Hall the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month. The flat bread is $5 and the Bolani (vegetable stuffed Afghan flat bread) is $7.

100% of the sales proceeds have gone back to the family, which helps supplement the household income for this family with six children.

Please (click name to) contact Jennifer with any questions, etc.

Day Center Meal

Saturday, November 23

November's meal - Braum’s burgers, slaw, pickled okra, oranges and homemade cookies.

We also provide milk for breakfast, thanks to Sue Haskins. If you would like to contribute cookies, please text Caroline Johnson.

Collars, leashes, treats, toys or kibble are needed for the newly-opened dog shelter - a 600-square food, climate-controlled space to house pets for clients who may otherwise have not sought services.

Simply place your donations — be it for human or canine — in (or near) the Just Do It Now box in the Narthex area and they will be delivered to the Day Center. Thank you!

1st Sunday Food Collection

Kendall Whittier, Inc.

Emergency Food Pantry

Sunday, November 3

Our First Sunday Food Collection for the Kendall Whittier Food Pantry is in need of breakfast cereal (Cheerios, Corn Flakes, or other less sweet cereals) and 1-2 lb. bags of rice.

Canned fruit and boxed cereal are immediate needs for the Food Pantry, so feel free to bring donations to the church at any time, and we will distribute.

Cash donations are also

accepted and appreciated!

College Hill's

Blessing Box

You have seen the beautiful Blessing Box in the west garden between the sanctuary and parking lot.

This is beautiful in two ways: the construction and design, but also the blessing it gives those in need who pass by the church. With the box, they can slate their hunger, quench their thirst, wash, combat headaches.

You have been generous supplying that box, but we are down to two weeks of supply. If you are able, we could use individual packets of non-perishable food, small drink containers, hygiene products like soap, sanitizer, women's products. Bring this to the Blessing Box closet in Fellowship Hall.

Pollinator Garden News

Our pollinator gardens successfully attracted monarchs!

On two separate visits, Caroline Johnson spotted caterpillars on the tuberosa milkweed and delivered them to her front porch butterfly house. They joined others from her garden and, after

gorging themselves on milkweed leaves, the caterpillars performed their magical transformation into lovely, green chrysalises.

On October 24, the Johnsons’ last butterfly baby, known as College Hill #2, was released to begin his incredible flight to Mexico where he will spend the winter. CH#2 was the last of the Johnsons’ 14

caterpillars released after the monarchs’ second migration through Oklahoma.

Joy/Concern Prayer Requests

Please submit your requests for prayers of joy or concern in the bowl in the Narthex.

Prayer requests are shared during our live streamed worship service on Sundays, but muted during this time.

Also, please reach out to Jan Swafford, Congregational Care Ministry Team Moderator, any team member, or Rev. Todd with needs and concerns.

We have added to our weekly bulletins

and newsletters a new

QR Code

that will take people to the Donation page of our church website. Studies show how important this method of donating has become, especially for younger generations.

The code can be used for "Pledges or General Donations" to our operating budget, or for "Special Donations" which can be designated to occasional special collections taken throughout the year.
