"Giving thanks in all circumstances": A video message from Bishop Gates

A General Thanksgiving
Accept, O Lord, our thanks and praise for all that you have done for us. We thank you for the splendor of the whole creation, for the beauty of this world, for the wonder of life, and for the mystery of love.
We thank you for the blessing of family and friends, and for the loving care which surrounds us on every side.
We thank you for setting us at tasks which demand our best efforts, and for leading us to accomplishments which satisfy and delight us.
We thank you also for those disappointments and failures that lead us to acknowledge our dependence on you alone.
Above all, we thank you for your Son Jesus Christ; for the truth of his Word and the example of his life; for his steadfast obedience, by which he overcame temptation; for his dying, through which he overcame death; and for his rising to life again, in which we are raised to the life of your kingdom.
Grant us the gift of your Spirit, that we may know him and make him known; and through him, at all times and in all places, may give thanks to you in all things. Amen.

Good morning! It’s wonderful to be back in church again. I look forward to when we can all gather together.
When Sarah asked me if I’d speak about Stewardship, I immediately thought of our official church motto: “Centered in God, Focused on Others.”
I’ve been coming to St. Andrew’s for about 12 years. Like Courtney mentioned last week, I was in search of a spiritual home, not because I was moving, but because I was in crisis. It took three visits and I was hooked. Three very special women drew me in. Reverend Beth, with her inspirational sermons, Jody Wood, who smiled broadly and with such joy as I watched her in the choir, and Edie Ridley, who relentlessly encouraged me to fill out the little orange card. I’m sure she’s looking down on us. These are three very special people.
Since then I’ve been on the Vestry for six of the last seven years. I’ve been an active and enthusiastic volunteer for many of our amazing outreach ministries, such as Rosie’s Day, Rehoboth House, and Friendship Home. I’d like to say a few words about each of these. For those of you on virtual church who currently aren’t already members of St. Andrew’s, we do some wonderful things in the community that touch so many people.

Once again, Church Hill United Methodist Church is reaching out to us to join them in outreach for City Reach. City Reach is not primarily about the clothes and other items we bring (the stuff), but more about the interaction between the youth and the unhoused leaders. But the stuff is still vitally important to folks who need winter coats, heavy clothes and new socks. The unhoused community is already asking about it. Due to COVID City Reach with the youth is not going to happen,
However, on December 11th and 12th there is going to be a collaboration between MANNA (Many Angels Needed Now and Always) and Common Cathedral to have a different version of City Reach. They are asking churches to collect the items listed below which will be sorted by the unhoused leaders, and then given to the unhoused community.
- Coats
- Socks
- Sweatshirts/Sweaters
- Pants
- Hats/gloves
- Handwarmers
- Blankets/sleeping bags
We are asking that all clothing items be men’s since we see 80% men and even the women prefer men’s clothing due to its functional nature. Clothes should be clean and free of rips, tears and stains. They should be in a condition that you would wear.
Dunkin Donuts gift cards ("Dignity Cards") will also be collected to be distributed as a meal, a warm place to eat, and use of the facilities are so important to the unhoused community. You can either drop off gift cards or make a donation for the gift cards to be purchased.
The office at the CHUMC Fellowship center is open every Tuesday from 10:00AM to 5:00PM. If you are available on Tuesday, please stop by Fellowship Center and drop your donations off in the church office. If Tuesday is not good for you, please reach out to Mark Kingston (MKingston@easterninsurance.com, 781-264-7366) or Chuck Frary (hloring.cfrary@verizon.net), so that they can arrange a time for you. Donations can also be dropped off at the Norwell Council on Aging, but please call first to be sure someone is available to take in your donation. PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE BAGS OF DONATED ITEMS OR GIFT CARDS/CHECKS OUTSIDE EITHER LOCATION!
All donations should be dropped off no later than Sunday, December 6th
Thank you all for working together to continue this important outreach mission!

In these challenging times, it's often easy to get lost in all of the bad news that 2020 has given us. We'd love for you to share some of the good news in your lives! What are the blessings that you have that you'd like to share with our community: a new grandchild, a new job, recovery from an illness, etc. We have received some wonderful contributions so far and we want to keep them coming!
Please email them (and any pictures if you'd like) to Carole at office@standrewshanover.org and we'll put them in the Messenger. Let's share our blessings!
