St. Michael's Academy

 :

Thank you for your response yesterday to our ACTION NEEDED email. Needless to say, it has created quite a stir. Please know our intention is not to cause a problem between the city of Springfield and St. Michael's Academy. We have always enjoyed a good relationship with the city and are grateful for it. However, for the first time since the inception of the program, they have asked us to sign a contract that holds us responsible for an unspecified shortfall that we have almost no control over. We will continue to work on a solution and keep you informed of any new developments.

As you know, tomorrow will be a remote learning day. The assignment for the day (any day this weekend) is to complete the Virtual Walk-a-thon with your family and to complete the assignment given by the teacher. It looks like Friday, Saturday and at least part of Sunday will be beautiful walking days! Once the walk is completed, the Walk-a-thon Family Entry Form (below) must be completed and submitted in order to have a chance at winning one of this year's special family prizes.

Please remember we consider the Walk-a-thon a success if everyone has fun AND we raise the necessary funds. Our goal is $21,000. All money raised should be turned into school on Tuesday, October 13th.

Just a reminder, as we head into our four day weekend, even though we're trying to have a little fun, please adhere to the "mighty three" (mask wearing, social distancing, hand washing) and travel restrictions. We made it five weeks...let's keep it going!

Enjoy a great weekend!

Ms. Ann E. Dougal
Principal

 It's Here!

The Walk-a-thon Is Here!

The wait is over!  This weekend is the big Walk-a-thon! It's time to hit the pavement and get out and walk. If you have put off planning, now is the time to choose your method of participation.

We hope that all of our families will participate and don't forget to turn your sponsor sheet and money in on Tuesday.

And don't forget to enter one of the family prize categories.  To enter, click here.  Remember, you have to be in a Google account to upload photos or videos.  Don't have one? Use your child's SMA gmail account.  Not sure how to do that?  Click here.

Let's enjoy some great family time and have some FUN!

Tennis Comes To St. Michael's Academy!

We are pleased to announce that St. Michael's Academy is teaming up with MOU (Moving On Up with Tennis and Education) and the United States Tennis Association to receive free tennis equipment to start a tennis after school program at SMA in early spring!

MOU is a local organization that was started in 2016 by a group of tennis players who wanted to share their love for the game. The goal is to provide under-served kids in the greater Springfield area with tennis instruction, life skills and potentially, access to future academic opportunities through sports.

MOU just finished a 4 week Saturday morning program (9-11 a.m.) during the month of September. Normally, this is a summer program with two 2 weeks sessions but necessitated a change this year due to Covid. Additional information about MOU can be found online.

Beginning with the second grade and up to eighth grade this current school year, we have been teaching tennis twice a week for each class. Students were taught the correct way to hit the forehand and backhand and volleying techniques. They are also learning how to hit an overhead properly.  Due to Covid restrictions, we were not able to teach the proper way to serve.

Our younger students have been working on skills training such as running, jumping and hopping.

Traveling During the Massachusetts
Travel Ban:

The weather has been great this fall! We all want to take a ride and see the beautiful foliage! We are getting the urge to travel before winter sets in!

However, Massachusetts does have a travel ban on many high-risk states in the country. As of October 8, 2020, there are only 6 states or areas that are considered as low-risk states. The low-risk states include: Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Vermont, and the District of Columbia.

If you must travel to any other high-risk state you will need to follow the travel ban guidelines of quarantine or testing for your child to be able to return to school upon your return. The guidelines that apply for return to school are listed below:

Quarantine Requirement and Testing Options
14-Day Quarantine Requirement

All individuals entering Massachusetts after 12:01 a.m. on August 1, 2020 must quarantine for 14 days from the date of arrival in Massachusetts unless the individual meets one of the criteria below:
  • Lower-risk State: This includes individuals coming from a COVID-19 lower-risk state within the United States, as detailed above.
  • 72-hour Testing Rule: The individual can produce, upon request, proof of a negative test result for COVID-19 from a test administered on a sample taken no longer than 72 hours before your arrival in Massachusetts.
To read the total Travel Ban Guidelines and requirements please use the link below:

If you have any questions please call the school and ask for the Nurse to assist in clarification for return dates to school.
It is imperative that we continue to cooperate together as a team, in order to keep the St. Michael's Academy community healthy so that we may continue in person learning for our students, staff, and parents.

Safety is always our first priority!

 Picture Day

Get Ready To Smile!

Friday, October 16th, will be individual student picture day at St. Michael's Academy!  This is a free dress day for students and we suggest pulling our your Sunday best!

Picture order forms were sent home last Friday, October 2nd. Please complete the form and send it with your child on picture day. Parents also have the option of going online directly to Grynn and Barrett and placing your order and paying digitally.

All remote learners are asked to come to the school on October 16th, any time between 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. to have their picture taken. As with in-school learners, parents will have the option of completing an order form on the day of pictures or going directly online to order.

Food For Thought

"A tree is known by its fruit; a man by his deeds. A good deed is never lost; he who sows courtesy reaps friendship, and he who plants kindness gathers love."

St. Michael the Archangel, pray for us!

We pray for our brothers and sisters across our nation and across the world. May God give everyone strength during these especially stressful times.

We pray in a special way for all of our families and friends:

Doris Terfera
Phyllis Koons

We pray for our recently departed and for all those lives that have been taken by the Covid-19 virus across the world.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
