It's Picture Day on Sunday! | |

Sunday, May 14th at 11:00 a.m.
After worship on Sunday, May 14th, we'll again be making an effort to update our online St. Mark's photo directory. If you already have access and don't know how to update your info, this will be your opportunity! We'll have staff on hand to help update your family's information, as well as photographers to take a photo of you and your family (keep that in mind for dressing that Sunday morning). There's a lot of empty photos next to member information in our directory and we're hoping to remedy that some this weekend. This is part of an ongoing effort to maintain our directory, as well as to help St. Mark's continue to be a thriving, relational congregation.

Library Expresses Thanks - Further Donations Needed | |
The International District Public Library recently sent St. Mark’s a lovely Thank You note for the items we collected in March. As a reminder, this new library building opened last July, and many of the area’s unhoused utilize the library to get out of the weather, relax, read books and magazines, use the computers, charge their cellphones, and use the public restrooms. The library has no more storage for clothing/hygiene items but let us know that they could use the following: bottled water, individual-sized powdered drink mixes (like Gatorade singles) and small snacks like granola bars. Donated items can be dropped off in the box in the church entrance by May 28th. Feel free to reach out to Dawn Adkins (via email here) with questions. | |

St. Cecilia Patron Saint of Music and Musicians
Feast Day November 22
Cecilia was born in the second century, into a wealthy Christian Roman family. She was given in marriage to Valerian, a pagan nobleman. During her wedding ceremony she was said to have sung in her heart to God and before the consummation of her nuptials, she told her husband she had taken a vow of virginity and had an angel protecting her. Valerian asked to see the angel as proof. Cecilia told him he would have eyes to see once he was baptized. Following his baptism, Valerian returned to his wife and found an angel at her side. When Valerian's brother Tibertius heard of the angel and his brother's baptism, he was also baptized.
The two brothers dedicated themselves to burying the Christian martyrs, which was illegal. They were arrested and sentenced to death for refusing to renounce their religion. Cecilia continued the work of converting people to the Christian faith and of burying the Christian dead, even though it was against the law. Hundreds were baptized through her witness and strength of faith. Her refusal to worship false gods and her burying of the dead, lead to her arrest. She was brought to trial, and sentenced to death. It took several days for her to die, and it is said that she converted many people who came to care for her as she was dying.
St Cecilia reminds us of the ways music and art can lead us to praise God.

John Dryden’s poem “A Song for Saint Cecilia’s Day” set to music by Handel in his “Ode for Saint Cecilia’s Day.”
Charles Gounod composed the Saint Cecilia Mass. Benjamin Britten wrote the “Hymn to Saint Cecilia.”
You may visit Saint Cecilia’s Icon hanging on our south wall of the Nave. This Icon was completed With the Grace of God by the hand of Pat Catlett (member St. Mark’s Sacred Arts Guild).

Advance care planning is an organized process of communication about your healthcare goals and wishes. The result is a written document (advance directive) that describes your wishes and names who you want to speak on your behalf if there were a time when you couldn’t speak for yourself. This is an important part of routine healthcare for all adults. Complete your advance directive and share that plan because YOUR CHOICES MATTER.
Gwendolyn Facciano, Advance Care Planning Specialist with Presbyterian Healthcare Services will be presenting on 05/21/2023 on Advance Care Planning. Come learn about Advance Care Planning and ask any questions that you may have on Sunday, May 21 at 11:15 in the Parish Hall. All are welcome.

NM Immigrant Law Center & ABQ FaithWorks
Asylum Application and Work Permit Clinic

Friday, June 2, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. - St. Mark’s will again host the NM Immigrant Law Center and Albuquerque FaithWorks for an Asylum Application and Work Permit Clinic. A few St. Mark’s volunteers are needed throughout the day in either 2- to 4- hour shifts for greeting guests, providing basic and administrative assistance (copies & answering questions), and to provide food for both volunteers and clients. Bilingual volunteers may contact NMILC directly for training information at (505) 247-1023.

A Call to Artists - Deadline is May 27th | |

Theme: Climate Change - Our Fragile Earth
In our faith tradition, God calls us to be stewards of his creation and St. Mark's Episcopal church continues to work on finding solutions to the climate crisis in our world. One of the ways to change hearts and minds is to focus on the beauty and fragility of our ecosystem. Another is to highlight problems and propose solutions. Artists are uniquely positioned to both challenge and encourage through their works of art. We hope that this call for art highlights new perspectives and inspires a growing community of people working towards climate solutions. Any media will be accepted, however we have limited space for 3-dimensional works and sculpture artists will need to provide their own stands. The deadline for entries is Saturday, May 27th.

A Morning of Contemplative/Meditative Prayer | |

Saturday, May 20 from 9:30 a.m. to Noon
Theme: "Easter Joy"
"Joy" is a word present throughout scripture, especially in the Psalms and Christian scripture. But what is joy? It is not happiness and is often set alongside pain and suffering. Psalm 30, vs 6 says "Weeping may spend the night, but joy comes in the morning." And the Epistle of James 1:2a says "My brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of any kind, consider it nothing but joy . . ." This morning will be devoted to joy - exploring, meditating and sitting in silence with it.

There is a recital coming up in UNM's Keller Hall, The Temptation of Song. It is kind of an introduction to the Love of Art Song. It is a short concert with a tasting of song!
Mezzo Soprano Jacqueline Zander-Wall and Pianist James Harder Song Recital reviewing the fourteen years of the Vocal Artistry Art Song Festival Event to Invite the public into the beauty and inspiration of Song. Works by Rossini, Colibran, Viardot, Mahler, Harbison, and Villa Lobos.
It is on May 25, at 7 p.m. in Keller Hall at UNM.
