Honoring All 2023 Graduates | |

This Sunday, May 21, St. Mark's will honor all those graduating from one educational position to another - or perhaps taking that step in the non-academic world. As is our custom, we will give each of our six graduating high-school seniors a personalized Book of Common Prayer to carry with them as their journey in life continues. All graduates will receive a blessing and celebrate with cake during Coffee Hour in the Parish Hall.

Sunday Group Forum: Advance Care Planning | |

Advance care planning is an organized process of communication about your healthcare goals and wishes. The result is a written document (advance directive) that describes your wishes and names who you want to speak on your behalf if there were a time when you couldn’t speak for yourself. This is an important part of routine healthcare for all adults. Complete your advance directive and share that plan because YOUR CHOICES MATTER.
Gwendolyn Facciano, Advance Care Planning Specialist with Presbyterian Healthcare Services will be presenting on 05/21/2023 on Advance Care Planning. Come learn about Advance Care Planning and ask any questions that you may have on Sunday, May 21 at 11:15 in the Parish Hall. All are welcome.

Building Renewal Committee Update (5/18) | |

During his final Sunday forum, our Liturgical Architect Consultant, Robert Habiger, responded to the following question: “If you were sharing with Architectural Firms what they need to know about St. Mark’s, what would you say?” Without hesitation he replied that "the clergy and professional staff at St. Mark’s are uniformly outstanding; and, second, that the people in this community really care, share, and pay attention."
This seems a beautiful response because it was not about bricks and mortar, instruments and furnishings, systems and mechanicals, but our essential spirit. Robert has fed our spirit, sharing his extensive experience. Robert’s lessons affirm the three essential elements that reflect how we do church in our Episcopal environment:
- Living Water for all as physically present for Baptism and Renewal of Baptismal Vows.
- An accessible Table for Eucharist; not a high altar for sacrifice.
- An Ambo – the Lectern, Podium, Pulpit – from which the lessons and prayers are often delivered by the Laity.
Beyond these three elements in the worship space, quality materials and craftmanship are requisite, but not for mere ornamentation or performance in place of worship.
As you observe our worship services, notice the creativity demonstrated in a space that was nevertheless designed for a different time. Virtually join or attend in person for a Thursday Eucharist that celebrates different saints and church exemplars and notice the location of the table, the ambo, the water, and the laity. The Table, the Ambo, and the Font are on the floor, as is the Acolyte who is in a wheelchair. Notice, too, that it is make-do in terms of space. In our renewal, we look to the space to be generative and integral to our worship.
With Robert’s final Sunday presentation, the Building Renewal Committee’s selection team is prepared for interviewing Architectural Firms. While we have now done the hard and pleasing work of understanding what we intend to do and why, we also face the realities and frustrations inherent in any building project. Identifying the right designers, planners, engineers, contractors, and on and on. Unfortunately, we learned last minute that the first firm we intended to interview withdrew from consideration. Most likely, almost all of us have experienced this type of setback in our own personal and professional projects. Fortunately, we have had a very good meeting with the next firm and found great interest in our project. We know getting the right fit with the selected architect is tantamount to success!
Finally, sincere gratitude to all as you attend to this project to the degree that you can, and for your support for our Rector, our Senior Warden, our Vestry, our Professional Staff, and the Building Renewal Committee who are working smart and hard for our mutual benefit. Your attention and presence assure that we’ll carry the day!

Summer of Conversation Kickoff
Sunday, May 28th at 11:15 in the Parish Hall
Starting after worship on the Feast of Pentecost (May 28th), we are setting out to train a group of adventurous members of St. Mark's, then have them commit to an initiative called, "The Summer of Conversation." It is a simple, but radical idea: to meet with members and newcomers and those whom we don't know well, to listen, to ask questions, and become lovingly curious about each other's lives. The hope is that together we will discover where God is at work in our lives and in the community of St. Mark's. All are welcome and encouraged to come to the training session during formation hour on Sunday, May 28th.

New Library Mini Gallery Opens | |

The Sacred Arts Guild is pleased to announce the opening of the new library gallery space. In response to the request of staff for some artwork for the library, the Guild decided to include in the space a mini gallery to feature the artwork of some of our St. Mark’s artists. First up is Allen Lowery, a longtime member of St. Mark's, and a professional artist with a BFA from UNM. He has exhibited in nontraditional exhibit spaces such as the Albuquerque Little Theatre, Lovelace Hospital, etc. and of course has sold many pieces through our regular gallery. Allen works in acrylic and mixed media. Please take a moment after service and when attending meetings to pop into the library to enjoy his talent.

NM Immigrant Law Center & ABQ FaithWorks
Asylum Application and Work Permit Clinic

Friday, June 2, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. - St. Mark’s will again host the NM Immigrant Law Center and Albuquerque FaithWorks for an Asylum Application and Work Permit Clinic. A few St. Mark’s volunteers are needed throughout the day in either 2- to 4- hour shifts for greeting guests, providing basic and administrative assistance (copies & answering questions), and to provide food for both volunteers and clients. Bilingual volunteers may contact NMILC directly for training information at (505) 247-1023.

Pentecost Pilgrimage in Place | |

The Pilgrimage for Unity invites you to prepare for the Feast of Pentecost with a "Pilgrimage in Place." The Pilgrimage for Unity is committed to healing and building up the Body of Christ by ceaseless opportunities for profound, shared spiritual experience and dialogue. There are a variety of ways to participate in this year's Pentecost Pilgrimage in Place. Design your own pilgrimage route, and walk it alone or with friends. Enjoy seven short video devotions by members of the Pilgrimage for Unity Steering Committee (including Mother Sylvia). Join other Unity Pilgrims for Zoom gatherings to mark the beginning (May 18), middle (May 25), and end (May 28) of your journey from the Feast of the Ascension through the Feast of Pentecost.

The International District Public Library recently sent St. Mark’s a lovely Thank You note for the items we collected in March. As a reminder, this new library building opened last July, and many of the area’s unhoused utilize the library to get out of the weather, relax, read books and magazines, use the computers, charge their cellphones, and use the public restrooms. The library has no more storage for clothing/hygiene items but let us know that they could use the following: bottled water, individual-sized powdered drink mixes (like Gatorade singles) and small snacks like granola bars. Donated items can be dropped off in the box in the church entrance by May 28th. Feel free to reach out to Dawn Adkins (via email here) with questions.

A Call to Artists - Deadline is May 27th | |

Theme: Climate Change - Our Fragile Earth
In our faith tradition, God calls us to be stewards of his creation and St. Mark's Episcopal church continues to work on finding solutions to the climate crisis in our world. One of the ways to change hearts and minds is to focus on the beauty and fragility of our ecosystem. Another is to highlight problems and propose solutions. Artists are uniquely positioned to both challenge and encourage through their works of art. We hope that this call for art highlights new perspectives and inspires a growing community of people working towards climate solutions. Any media will be accepted, however we have limited space for 3-dimensional works and sculpture artists will need to provide their own stands. A Morning of Contemplative/Meditative Prayer | |

Theme: "Easter Joy"
"Joy" is a word present throughout scripture, especially in the Psalms and Christian scripture. But what is joy? It is not happiness and is often set alongside pain and suffering. Psalm 30, vs 6 says "Weeping may spend the night, but joy comes in the morning." And the Epistle of James 1:2a says "My brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of any kind, consider it nothing but joy . . ." This morning will be devoted to joy - exploring, meditating and sitting in silence with it.

UNM's Keller Hall Vocal Performance | |

There is a recital coming up in UNM's Keller Hall, The Temptation of Song. It is kind of an introduction to the Love of Art Song. It is a short concert with a tasting of song!
Mezzo Soprano Jacqueline Zander-Wall and Pianist James Harder Song Recital reviewing the fourteen years of the Vocal Artistry Art Song Festival Event to Invite the public into the beauty and inspiration of Song. Works by Rossini, Colibran, Viardot, Mahler, Harbison, and Villa Lobos.
It is on May 25, at 7 p.m. in Keller Hall at UNM.
