COVID-19 Vaccines for Immunocompromised People
Currently, CDC is recommending that moderately to severely immunocompromised people receive an additional dose. This includes people who have:
  • Been receiving active cancer treatment for tumors or cancers of the blood
  • Received an organ transplant and are taking medicine to suppress the immune system
  • Received a stem cell transplant within the last 2 years or are taking medicine to suppress the immune system
  • Moderate or severe primary immunodeficiency (such as DiGeorge syndrome, Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome)
  • Advanced or untreated HIV infection
  • Active treatment with high-dose corticosteroids or other drugs that may suppress your immune response
People should talk to their healthcare provider about their medical condition, and whether getting an additional dose is appropriate for them.

Regarding those who received the J&J vaccine:
The FDA’s recent EUA amendment only applies to mRNA COVID-19 vaccines, as does CDC’s recommendation.
Emerging data have demonstrated that immunocompromised people who have low or no protection following two doses of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines may have an improved response after an additional dose of the same vaccine. There is not enough data at this time to determine whether immunocompromised people who received the Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen COVID-19 vaccine also have an improved antibody response following an additional dose of the same vaccine.

To schedule a vaccine (1st, 2nd or 3rd--if applicable), please go to https://www.vaccinenm.org/, or check with your local pharmacy.

How is Your Spanish?
ABQ FaithWorks is designing a new win-win program to partner and support local companies in training and hiring asylum seekers resident in our town. A small, weekly, 1-3-hour commitment helping coordinate services for a family is where you start.  You work on a team of Family Liaisons and have other teams for food, clothing, and driving available. Having some Spanish is helpful. Join this team and build community by sharing in this good work. Call Jessica Corley today, tell her you want to be a Family Liaison for asylum seekers and schedule training. Jessica: 505 333 8059 or by email. Church Women United: Human Rights Day Celebration
Church Women United, an ecumenical women’s gathering, will be meeting on Zoom for their Human Rights Day celebration on September 10th, beginning at 9:30 a.m. The program is centered on the United Nations Human Rights Declaration signed on December 10, 1948, guaranteeing basic human rights for all people. The speaker will be Rev. Shelley Repp, the Executive Director of the NM Dream Center. As a children’s minister, Rev. Repp saw the need to protect adults and children from human trafficking and homelessness and founded the center which is the only one of its kind in NM The program on Zoom will include visuals and breakout groups for additional discussion. Our annual Human Rights Award will also be presented. If you wish to participate and are NOT on either CWU’s mailing list or e-mail list, please contact Marilyn Stoops at 265-8358 or mstoops@swcp.com.
Donations for Haiti
On Saturday, August 14, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck the southwest portion of Haiti. This devastating earthquake was followed by Tropical Storm Grace on Monday night and much of Tuesday. More than 1 million people, including more than half a million children, have been impacted by the back-to-back disasters, and the death toll is close to 2000. Episcopal Relief & Development and its partners are responding immediately with direct assistance to vulnerable households in the region, as partners plan long-term recovery. Your generous gift can provide assistance to help people in the wake of these disasters. To assist in these efforts, visit episcopalrelief.org/haiti-relief.
Email submissions should be sent (via email) to the Communications Specialist by 12:00 p.m. each Thursday for inclusion on Friday e-news. Please see submission guidelines here.
