The Micro Self-Harms Creating Macro Depletion To Your Progress

Hello Carole Ann,

You know, sometimes we do things behind our own backs.

I eat behind my own back.

Not in a Cirque du Soleil-kind of contortion but it’s a snarfing of the end of the French loaf; it’s a couple of “invisible” slices of cheese-to-mouth power moves before adding them to a sandwich or dish.

This, I reason, doesn’t count.

It doesn’t “count” because it’s not on a plate or an official part of the meal so it’s not real food. The scales shout otherwise.

Funny old thing self-deception. You are both victim and perp at the same time and neither of you is putting your hands up and admitting guilt. I call them micro self-harms or mini saboteurs that snatch our energy or compromise our potential.

Perhaps when we committed these crimes against ourselves -  (“It was an inside job, guvner!” - we were alerted to the fact with some kind of prod to the cranium, we may think twice about giving them parole.

So secretly we sabotage and get in our own way and it stealthily thieves our energy and potential.

If you are wondering what an identikit image of these offenders are - here are a few of those unconscious, but usual, suspects:

  • Procrastination – avoiding doing something that you know, like gum on your shoe, will not leave you alone and in peace until you have addressed it. And, anyway, the laundry is looking awfully urgent right now!
  • Tolerating – like a pebble in your shoe, tolerations are small pains which we live with which slowly wear you down by a thousand annoyances. The shoe-jungle, the (“one day I will need these”) magazine/newspaper stack, the outsize or under-sized clothes you are holding on to, the oblivious whistling colleague, that clingy cough.
  • Saying yes to things you know are “draggy”.
  • Doom scrolling.
  • Investing in doubts instead of dreams.
  • Overthinking but not committing.
  • “Settling”.
  • Financial apathy.
  • Perfectionism – a very pretty but damaging form of self-harm.

There are, of course, many more felons such as low self-esteem, people pleasing, lack of self-belief and poor boundaries. Law and order transpires by knowing and spotting you are doing it and seeking change.

If you want to hand over your self-harming crims to the authorities and have them permanently rehabilitated – you can book a free call with me now 😊
