Message from Superintendent Deborah Houser:

As we approach the holiday season, it is with great joy and gratitude that I reflect on the strong sense of community and support that defines our school district. The importance of family cannot be overstated, especially during this time of year. As superintendent, I am reminded of the profound impact the support and love of families have on the well-being and success of our students and staff.

The holidays provide a unique opportunity for families to come together, celebrate shared traditions, and create lasting memories. These moments contribute to our students' overall happiness and fulfillment and play a crucial role in fostering a positive and supportive school environment.

As we embrace the spirit of the season, let us recognize and appreciate each family's role in the success of our school community. May this holiday season be a time of joy, connection, and renewal for all of our families, and may the bonds we strengthen during this time continue to enrich the lives of our students and staff throughout the year. I wish you all a warm and wonderful holiday season!

Celebrating Middie Families:

Speaking of family, when thinking about our Middie Family, we realized how many of our MCSD staff have a family member or spouse who also works for the district. It turns out, nearly 15% of our staff fall into that category!

Curriculum Department Update:

It's wonderful to see the implementation of “Structured Literacy” across Middletown City Schools. This evidence-based approach is known for its effectiveness in teaching fundamental reading and writing skills. Focusing on explicit instruction in phonology (sound structures), the alphabetic principle (letter/sound relationship), morphology (meaningful parts of words), and orthography (standardized spelling system), and delivering it in a multimodal manner, all help make learning more accessible and effective, especially for those who encounter challenges in reading.

A big shout-out to Mrs. Uhl's kindergarten class at Central Academy, Mrs. Riva’s 1st grade class at Rosa Parks Elementary, and Mr. Jones’ 3rd grade class at Mayfield Elementary for their dedication to implementing Structured Literacy. It's amazing to see educators actively engaging students in such a crucial part of their academic growth. See them in action below!
