Refreshed for the Journey Ahead
We are right at the midpoint of our two-week holiday break, a pause that offers space to rest and reconnect. This time away matters. It allows minds to reset, bodies to recharge, and hearts to reflect. The second half of the school year is ahead, and it will soon be time to return and be ready to give our very best to the work still in front of us.
The schools are quiet right now. The halls echo a little differently without students and staff filling them with energy and purpose. I feel that quiet; I miss our Middies when we are apart for this long. Our buildings come alive when students are learning, laughing, and growing alongside the adults who care so deeply for them. That life and connection are what make our schools special.
Each of us has been given many gifts, talents, strengths, and opportunities, that are meant to be used. Those gifts grow in value when they are used to better ourselves, support one another, and positively impact the world around us. Every student, every staff member, every Middie is a winner in their own right. When each of us commits to “winning our world,” our classrooms, our schools, and our community become places where real difference is made.
The days ahead will move quickly once we return. The hope is that this break continues to provide rest and joy, while also building excitement for what comes next. The second semester deserves our full hearts and full effort. I cannot wait to hear the halls fill again and to continue this journey together.

With colder weather on the horizon, we want to explain the careful process behind deciding if Middletown City School District will delay or close schools. We shared this on our Facebook account at the beginning of December but want to share again in case it was missed.
Please be aware that deciding on a delay or closure is a lengthy, thoughtful process that begins well before the final decision is made. That includes the amount of precipitation, snow accumulation, and road conditions. Before 5:00 am, our Director of Business Operations and Maintenance Crews drive through the district to assess the conditions of main roads, side streets, school parking lots, and sidewalks. The Director of Business Operations also keeps a close eye on the National Weather Service outlook and multiple weather forecasts. Our Director of Business Operations consults with the Superintendent to make a joint decision based on the conditions and information available.
Each storm is different, and there is no exact science to predict how the weather will develop or how it will impact our buses, roads, and school operations. We always make the safest and most informed decision for our students, families, and staff. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate unpredictable winter conditions. A decision to delay or cancel school for snow will typically be made by 5:00 am.
To communicate a delay or school closing, we will use:
- One Call Now Automated Phone Calls
-
Our Webpage (www.middletowncityschools.com)
- Official District Social Media Accounts (Facebook and Instagram)
- Local Cincinnati and Dayton News Stations (you can tune in on the tv station or download the app of the local stations)
As a reminder, a 2-hour delay means:
Middletown High School starts at 9:15 AM.
Middletown Middle School, Central Academy, Miller Ridge start at 10:05 AM.
Amanda, Creekview, Mayfield, Rosa Parks and Wildwood Elementary Schools will start at 10:50 AM.
AM Preschool classes are canceled during a two-hour delay.
If you are a parent/guardian and are not receiving the notification calls, please reach out to your school secretary with the name/grade of your student and the number you would like on file for calls. This will help get you on the correct individual school call list as well as the general call list.
Please note, this will take time to get updated in the system, but then you should receive calls.

Christmas For All Brings Joy, Inclusion, and Community to MHS
The holiday spirit was alive and well at Middletown High School on December 16 during our annual Christmas For All celebration! Students from across the district gathered at MHS for a day filled with joy, inclusion, and community—creating memories that will last long after the season ends.
From the moment students arrived, the rooms were filled with energy and excitement. The celebration included dancing, crafts, cookie decorating, games, and a special visit and photo opportunity with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Students also received festive goodie bags to take home—one more way to help the magic of the day continue beyond the event.
A delicious meal added to the celebration, with students enjoying a catered lunch prepared by Chef Jerry and his team, including the crowd-favorite mac and cheese side dish. Staff in attendance were also treated to Chick-fil-A, generously donated by Berachah Church, helping everyone feel appreciated while supporting the event.
We are grateful for the support of our partners at MidPointe Library, the Middletown Division of Police, Middletown Firefighters, Berachah Church, Team Fastrax, Milton’s Donuts, and the MHS Hope Squad for their time, support, and generosity. Through your shared gifts of time, talents, and donations, this day was truly unforgettable.
We also want to recognize the incredible planning and care that made this celebration possible. Thank you to the Student Services Department and our dedicated staff members who organized, supervised, and supported students throughout the day. Seeing our students with diverse learning needs smiling, celebrating, and connecting with peers is truly priceless.
Christmas For All is a beautiful reminder of what makes Middletown special: a community that shows up, supports one another, and celebrates every student. Thank you to everyone who helped create such a meaningful day and for continuing to model the true spirit of the holidays—joy, togetherness, and community.

Property Tax Changes Could Reduce Future Funding for Middletown City Schools
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine recently signed two new laws — House Bill 129 and House Bill 186 — that change how school districts receive money from local property taxes.
In simple terms, these laws limit how much school districts can collect from certain property taxes when property values increase. That means even if property values rise, school funding may not rise at the same rate.
According to financial estimates prepared by the Ohio Legislative Service Commission (LSC), the combined impact of these changes could reduce Middletown City Schools’ revenue by approximately:
- $2,777,305 in tax year 2026
- $2,882,604 in tax year 2027
That equals about 6.45% of the district’s projected state revenue each year.
These reductions are not expected to be a one-time adjustment. Instead, they represent an ongoing change in how school funding grows over time. If these projections hold, it could affect the district’s ability to keep up with rising costs and continue current staffing levels, programs, and long-term financial planning without additional local revenue.
District leadership will continue to monitor the implementation of these laws and will incorporate any changes into future financial forecasting. Middletown City Schools remains committed to transparency, responsible stewardship of public funds, and advocating for stable, predictable school funding.

Showing Up Matters, Every Day
The Show Up Rise Up Attendance Campaign began at Middletown High School and Middle School in October. The third "Win the Week" challenge was December 8th-13th.
Students earned a $10 gift card to BW3s for October, a free sub card to Jersey Mike's for November and a $10 gift card to Cassano's in December.
One MHS and MMS student winner is selected from a raffle each month and can choose from large ticket items as their prize. Each student has been excited to choose their prize, we have given away a Playstation 5 to two students, Apple Airpods Max and three $500 Amazon gift cards!
All students who had perfect attendance for a "win the week" challenge had their name in a raffle for the grand prize! The grand prize included premium tickets to a home Bengals game, transportation to the game, an on-field experience and a signed Chase Brown helmet!
Superintendent Debbie Houser and our very own Middie Man brought the energy, and the prizes! Thank you to Mr. Geselbracht and Mrs. Chicketti, MHS assistant principals, for announcing, playing music (Welcome to the Jungle, of course!), and supporting the event. Thanks Mr. Valenti and Mr. Manning, MMS principal and assistant principal, for leading a cafeteria-wide drum roll as students waited to hear the winner. Teamwork at its best!

Congratulations to our Grand Prize Winner!
Congratulations to Landon Johnson, a freshman at MHS, our Show Up, Rise Up Attendance Campaign grand prize winner! Landon attended the Bengals home game on December 28th for an unforgettable VIP Game Dey Experience as the Cincinnati Bengals took on the Arizona Cardinals.
Landon and a guest enjoyed on-field passes before the game, club seats, and food and drinks! We hope he had an amazing time cheering on RB Chase Brown and the Cincinnati Bengals.
We extend our appreciation to CareSource and Chase Brown for partnering with us. Together, we can rise up, show up, and Win the Week.

Happy Holidays from the Curriculum Department!
As we wrap up the first semester, I want to take a moment to recognize the incredible work happening across our district each day. Even as the pace intensifies and the weeks feel long, you remained focused on what matters most—our students. Your commitment, consistency, and care ensured that learning stayed strong through the very last days of the semester, and that does not go unnoticed. I am deeply proud of the way you continued to show up for students, support one another, and finish the semester with purpose and professionalism.
Closing out the semester, including the completion of winter testing, requires sustained focus and commitment, and we recognize the demands this places on our staff. Please know how much we appreciate the energy and effort it takes to push through this stretch. As we head into the break, my hope is that each of you finds time to truly step away—to rest, recharge, and reconnect with family, friends, and the things that bring you joy. You deserve the opportunity to relax and take care of yourself, and we look forward to welcoming you back refreshed and ready for the new year ahead.

Calling All Young Middie Chefs!
Get ready to showcase your culinary skills in Sodexo's Future Chefs Competition
The idea behind this event is to help educate our students in healthy eating habits AND give students who love to cook an opportunity to showcase themselves in a cooking competition. This year, we’re accepting entries from students in grade 3 through 6.
This year’s theme is Passport to Flavor - Take your taste buds on a global adventure! We’re inviting all Future Chefs to create a recipe inspired by a country or culture from anywhere in the world - from spicy tacos to tasty noodles or sweet treats - the possibilities are endless!
Seven students from across the district will be chosen as finalists to compete in an exciting cook-off on Thursday, March 26th at Middletown High School.
Students can submit their recipe to their school cafeteria by Friday, January 9th, for a chance to be selected. Paper copies will be available in the school cafeteria if needed.
Students can also submit their recipe online at: https://futurechefschallenge.com/

Wildwood Gives Back
This month, Wildwood Elementary and Adopt A Class partnered with BGR Packaging for the annual “Gift of Groceries” experience. Throughout November, BGR employees collected food donations, which Wildwood students packaged during BGR’s December Adopt A Class visit.
Working in teams alongside BGR leaders, students filled boxes for local families—learning firsthand that philanthropy can begin with simple acts of kindness and that everyone has something to give, whether time, talents, or resources. This experience connected classroom learning to real-world impact, highlighting teamwork, empathy, and community.
Students especially loved the friendly competition—racing to fill boxes and creating complete meals from the items, like pairing peanut butter with jelly or pasta sauce with spaghetti. All donations will directly support Wildwood families in need this holiday season.
We are grateful for our continued partnership with BGR Packaging through Adopt A Class and their commitment to our students and community.
