Wins for Cost of Living

HB24-1142 Reduce Income Tax Social Security Benefits

HB24-1142 by Representative Holtorf represents a significant win for Coloradans’ cost of living, especially for those nearing retirement. By lowering the age threshold from 65 to 55 for the state income tax subtraction on Social Security benefits, this bill directly reduces the tax burden on older individuals. In a climate of rising property taxes and increasing living expenses, this expanded tax relief helps preserve more of Social Security income, allowing Coloradans to better manage their financial stability as they approach retirement. With caps on deductions increased as well, this measure ensures meaningful support for those impacted by inflation and higher costs.

HB24-1457 Asbestos & Lead Paint Abatement Grant Program

HB24-1457 by Representative Winter is a significant win for Colorado's rural communities, as it establishes the Rural Housing and Development Asbestos and Lead Paint Abatement Pilot Program. This initiative provides grants to local governments to aid in the safe removal of hazardous materials from homes and commercial buildings. By offering financial support rather than imposing mandates, the bill empowers communities to proactively address health hazards associated with asbestos and lead paint. The associated cash fund, derived from penalties and fines related to hazardous waste, ensures that resources are allocated efficiently while minimizing administrative costs. Overall, this legislation promotes safer living environments and enhances public health in rural Colorado.

HB24-1431 Stable Housing for Survivors of Abuse Program

HB24-1431 by Representative Armagost creates the Stable Housing for Survivors of Domestic or Sexual Violence Program, which is a crucial step toward supporting survivors in Colorado. By contracting with community-based advocacy organizations, the program ensures that survivors receive direct assistance from trusted local groups, empowering those who best understand their unique needs. This bill also strengthens the link between housing support and the Colorado Works Program, ensuring that the most vulnerable populations are prioritized. With a $2 million annual appropriation, this initiative helps address the immediate housing needs of survivors while bolstering community-based efforts.

HB24-1435 Colorado Water Conservation Board Projects

HB24-1435 by Representative Catlin provides critical funding for water projects across Colorado, ensuring the long-term sustainability of the state’s water resources. By continuing key programs like floodplain mapping, weather modification, and water forecasting, this bill supports Colorado’s preparedness for drought and future water challenges. Additionally, the bill authorizes loans for projects that strengthen the state's water infrastructure, while amending current law to give the Colorado Water Conservation Board (CWCB) more flexibility in utilizing federal funds. This investment safeguards Colorado's water supply, benefitting both rural and urban communities.

How Republicans are Fighting for Your Tabor Rights

SB24-228: TABOR Refund Mechanisms offers substantial benefits to Coloradans by providing immediate financial relief through significant income and sales tax reductions. By returning an estimated $450 million to taxpayers in 2024, the bill allows residents to keep more of their hard-earned money, enhancing their ability to manage everyday expenses. Additionally, the structured approach to surplus distribution ensures that all taxpayers receive equitable refunds, promoting fairness within the tax system. This legislation not only alleviates the financial burden on families but also supports economic stability by encouraging spending and investment within the community, ultimately fostering a more prosperous Colorado for all.
