THE MINUTARIAN

The CART Fund

(Coins for Alzheimers Research Trust)

As I travel throughout the District, I'm pleased to see the "Blue Bucket" on many of the tables at your meetings.

Some clubs, including mine, continue to collect loose change and small bills each week to support this Rotarian conceived effort.

However, I realize that some of these buckets have been

repurposed for Happy Dollars and 50/50 drawings and various other uses. And it's possible that the origin has faded in memory.

The Cart Fund was founded in 1995 by Roger Ackerman, a Rotarian in Sumter, SC. While not an official Rotary International program, it is a non-profit grassroots

organization that provides “seed” money for cutting edge,

high impact research grants to help find a treatment or cure for Alzheimer’s Disease.

The goal of CART is to encourage exploratory and developmental Alzheimer’s Disease research projects within the United States. This is accomplished by providing financial support for the early and conceptual plans of those projects that may not yet be supported by extensive preliminary data, but have the potential to substantially advance biomedical research.

Since 1999, 64 grants totaling more than $11 million have been awarded to 62 recognized research institutions in the United States.

The CART Fund is a 501(C)3 organization governed by an Executive Committee and a Board of Directors composed of representatives from qualified Rotary districts that support the program.

George Sachs, RC Flagler Beach, serves as the District CART Chair. He would be pleased to introduce, (or reintroduce) your club to this worthy program.

Shelter Box USA Project Philippines

ShelterBox USA is planning a 1.6-million-dollar project to expand training of local response teams and grow capacity for greater impact in responding to future disasters in The Philippines.

Building on the creation and initial success of ShelterBox Operations Philippines (SBOP), this planned project will help prepare local communities for disaster by providing more people with disaster response training and increasing the amount of available pre-stocked aid for future disaster relief.

We hope you will attend our 30-minute webinar to learn how your Rotary Clubs and Districts can support this project. We have two options to accommodate your schedule.
