Rotary Foundation Month

The Rotary Foundation helps Rotary members to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace by improving health, providing quality education, improving the environment, and alleviating poverty.

The Foundation is a not-for-profit organization supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotary members and friends of the Foundation who share its vision of a better world. This support is essential to make possible activities, funded with Foundation grants, that bring sustainable improvement to communities in need.

The Rotary Foundation transforms your gifts into service projects that change lives both close to home and around the world.

Since it was founded more than 100 years ago, the Foundation has spent more than $4 billion on life-changing, sustainable projects.

And as further testimony to its strength and effectiveness The Foundation just received the highest possible rating from Charity Navigator for the 15th consecutive year.

Throughout this month, we will be highlighting various aspects of the Foundation, including District resources and information that can assist you and your club in increasing your community impact.

E-mail and Internet Security

This past week many of you received an e-mail from someone using my name and the District Governor title. A very similar action was also occurring in other Rotary Districts in our Zone and even included Zone 33/34 Director Jeremy Hurst. A quick look at the return e-mail address would have revealed that this was not from me and my e-mail was being spoofed.

Similar incidents have affected District leadership in 6970 and others in the past and are likely to occur regularly in the future.

Be assured that I would NEVER request gift cards or anything similarly unusual, and would always communicate with you directly or by phone regarding district financial business.

Sadly this is now a regular part of our lives as we rely so heavily on electronic and internet communications.

Here are some helpful tips and tricks to keep your devices—and inbox—safe from phishing attempts:

  • Watch out for emails containing urgent requests, particularly for money.
  • Be cautious of emails asking for personal information.
  • Review the sender’s email address, is the URL legitimate?
  • Never download a suspicious attachment, regardless of the sender.

If it looks too good to be true, it probably is!
