Rotary's Camp Florida
A joint project of the eight Rotary districts in Florida, Rotary’s Camp Florida in Brandon, Florida, is a 21-acre ADA-compliant campsite that provides a safe, fun space for children and adults with disabilities to learn, grow, and play.
The idea started at a local Rotary club meeting in March 1991 with a presentation on the needs of children with cancer. Concerned Rotarians formed a committee to study the feasibility of buying and operating a nearby camp that had closed, and in December 1991, Rotary’s Camp Florida was incorporated to acquire, operate, and maintain a year-round camp facility for children with special medical needs. With contributions from Rotarians throughout Hillsborough County, the property was purchased, and extensive renovations were begun to bring the cabins and common facilities up to modern standards.
Surrounded by private lakes and hundreds of oak trees, Camp Florida meets the full standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act and poses no barriers to the groups that use it. In June 1992, five special needs groups enjoyed the Camp. Today it is in use almost year-round, serving between 3,000 and 5,000 campers annually.
