Where to Eat...in Alexandria | Cedar Knoll
In 1760, the land on which Cedar Knoll now stands was purchased by George Washington and became River Farm, the northernmost of the five farms that made up Washington’s 18th Century estate. During his lifetime, Washington leased out River Farm to his personal secretary and nephew-in-law, Tobias Lear. The land was further divided by subsequent generations and the hearth of what is now Cedar Knoll was constructed in the early 1800s as a farm house on a plantation named Markland on the Potomac. The building was later remodeled and opened to the public as the Mount Vernon View Antique Shop.

Since 1941, the building operated as an inn and restaurant. After a brief hiatus, Cedar Knoll re-opened in the fall of 2015 as one of the most exciting new restaurants in the Washington metro area. From oysters Rockefeller and jumbo crab cakes, to venison, pork schnitzel and Seven Hills steak, the focus is on seasonal and locally sourced ingredients. Popular as a wedding and event venue, Cedar Knoll offers indoor and outdoor dining areas overlooking the Potomac River.

Almost Secret - Quiet Bars for Those in the Know
NY | Downtown | NoHo | Temple Bar Returns!
Temple Bar, the clandestine bar on Lafayette Street that served up martinis, mood lighting and a downtown version of uptown glamour until it closed on New Year’s Eve in 2017, has reopened. And though the management may be new, it is decidedly loyal to the memory of the original.

Maneesh K. Goyal and David Rabin have joined with Michael McIlroy and Sam Ross to resurrect a bar they all often leaned against in the past. Temple Bar’s name and its Art Deco-ish green décor have remained the same, though the space has been thoroughly refurbished. Also remaining in place is the skeletal chameleon that was the bar’s logo and is still the only clue that 332 Lafayette Street contains an elegant saloon.

The partners’ intentions in reviving Temple Bar are not too far from what the bar meant to achieve when it first opened more than 30 years ago. “I like to call this nightlife for grown-ups,” Rabin said. “It should feel a little bit elevated, a little bit aspirational, but it shouldn’t feel like just going to a club somewhere.”

DC | Downtown | U Street Historic District | The Gibson
Founded in 2009 by nightlife entrepreneurs Ian and Eric Hilton, The Gibson is a low-key, candle-lit lounge offering classic and house original cocktails. Before the reopening in August, Hilton thought he would have to relocate the 12-year-old bar from its sultry U Street space, but things worked out. Much remains the same: flickering candles, a jazz-heavy playlist, and a hidden gem of a rear patio—all outfitted with some new furnishings and fresh paint. While the bar does not bill itself as a “speakeasy,” drinkers will still search for an unmarked black door to enter.
