Architecture | NYT | Building Accessibility Into America, Literally

Thirty years on, the Americans With Disabilities Act has reshaped the way designers and the public have come to think about equity, civil rights and American architecture. But it's only a start.

The Capitol Crawl, it came to be called. In March 1990, several dozen activists, cheered on by supporters, left their canes and wheelchairs and pulled themselves up the steep stone steps of the United States Capitol.  They wanted to pressure Congress into ratifying the Americans With Disabilities Act. At the heart of what became a landmark of civil rights legislation was the elemental role of architecture and design - literally building accessibility into cities, products, public spaces and workplaces, without which equity would remain just talk.

Thirty years on, the A.D.A. has reshaped American architecture and the way designers and the public have come to think about civil rights and the built world.  (New York Times)
Washington Market Summary for June 2020

( Bright MLS )
Manhattan Residential Market Report Q2 2020

The average apartment price rose to $1,942,832 in the second quarter but was 20% lower than the record level of a year ago. As we mentioned at the beginning of the report, over 90% of the second quarter closings were negotiated before the covid-19 lockdown. This means the 2Q20 closing figures are reflective of the pre-virus market, not the current one. It is also important to remember that a year ago the data was inflated by a record number of luxury closings due to pending transfer tax increases.  The number of reported sales was 56% lower than a year ago, a big part of which can be attributed to the shutdown of real estate showings in late March.

Brooklyn Residential Market Report Q2 2020

The average apartment price fell 2% over the past year in Brooklyn to $900,622.  Co-op prices averaged $163,805 per room, 8% more than in 2019's second quarter.  Prices for 1-3 family houses averaged $1,171,985; a 5% decline compared to a year ago.  The median price was 3% higher than 2Q19.
Gardens | FT | How To Grow an Edible Garden

"There's a massive interest in how our food is produced and people are much more aware of what we are doing to our land," Aaron Bertelsen says. "There's suddenly a huge interest in soils too - earthworms are going to save mankind."

It's a belief shared by a growing number of gardeners for whom cultivating their own produce has become an ethical and ecological imperative - avoiding a cocktail of chemicals, degraded nutritional value and dizzying air miles.

In towns, increasing numbers of wannabe gardeners are growing in pots, on allotments (when waiting lists permit) and in the raised beds of small back gardens, while out in the countryside, edible gardens have become as coveted as herbaceous borders. Instagram bears this out, as summertime feeds fill with plot-to-plate images: abundant trugs overflowing with heritage tomatoes, beets and chard, ready to be washed and sliced, steamed or sautéed within minutes of harvest.  (Financial Times)
