Join Missio Seminary in Celebrating 50 Years

A Note from President Frank James
|
|
We are one-quarter of the way through 2022 and so much has transpired in three months.
Like many of you my prayers this past week have focused especially on the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Two Sundays ago, I noticed one of our older Church ladies slowly making her way into the sanctuary with a large sunflower (the Ukrainian national flower) prominently displayed on her dress. I loved her chutzpah! Another part of me was saddened by the stark reminder that evil still casts a dark shadow over this world. The hope for Ukraine, for MISSIO and the hope for the world is simply Jesus.
The city of Philadelphia has lifted its mask mandate. It feels like maybe--perhaps--hopefully, the COVID crisis is on the decline. MISSIO, like every other school, is trying to figure out what the new normal will be. Our plans are to go hybrid in the fall, but in the event of a COVID surge, we will be prepared and continue providing meaningful instruction with excellence.
We released a very insightful and relevant video with Missio’s three most recent board chairs: Joe Longo (2011-2014), Karen Sawyer (2014-2020), and Susan Post (2020-present). This video reveals the heart of Missio Seminary and what I believe, in part, distinguishes Missio as a seminary.
PRAYER. Please pray for peace in our world--especially in the Ukraine. And, pray for the future of MISSIO as we enter a new frontier of a post-COVID world.
Frank A. James III, DPhil, PhD
President and Professor of Historical Theology

A Discussion with the Last Three Board Chairs
|
|
This engaging and insightful interview demonstrates that God is at the heart of what we do and Missio is being led by strong and faithful leaders—leaders who are guiding Missio with a servant’s heart, faith, courage, and an authentic ability to lovingly embrace the intricate dynamics of our age.

Are you familiar with the term “the Red Zone”? It’s that space on a football field between the 20-yard line and the end zone. The team with the ball, the offense, is within 20 yards of scoring a touchdown. Missio is in “the Red Zone” with our REALChange Campaign. In fact, God has helped us raise more than $5.2 million toward our $5.8 million goal, or 90% of what we need. We have only 10 more yards to go!
Matt and Pat Millen are serving as honorary co-chairs of an effort we call REALChange: The Campaign for Missio. We set a goal of raising over $5.8 million to bring Missio to another level of excellence in its service to the Church. And today, we’re in the Red Zone, with fewer than 20 yards to go!
|
|
I’m writing to ask you to join us, helping us through the Red Zone for a touchdown. Your gift will allow Missio to offer the highest quality educational experience and provide much needed scholarships.
At a time when most seminaries across the country are shrinking, Missio is growing! Our prayer is for us to complete this campaign by June 30, 2022. Will you join us?
Thanks for considering,
|

Honorary Co-Chair
REALChange: The Campaign for Missio
P.S. I’ve gotten to know Missio pretty well. My wife Pat is a graduate (MAC ’07), along with my daughter Marianne (MAC ’14) and son Matthew (MDiv ’17). They chose Missio, and I’m glad they did!
For over 50 years the Spirit of God is at work in our midst. We are following Jesus into the world

Ruth Sutton Taylor was a remarkable woman, possessing a quick wit, a welcoming smile, and an obvious love of her Savior, Jesus Christ. She and her husband, Professor Thomas V. Taylor, were among those who founded Biblical – now Missio – Seminary in 1971. She was a faithful, hard-working member of the seminary staff for many years.
Mrs. Sherie Clark, after learning about Ruth’s home going, remarked, “How I thank God for Tom and Ruth, their faithful, gifted ministry for Christ and His Kingdom, and their loving friendship over so many years ... I cannot think of them without smiling!” Sherie, of course, is the widow of another of our founding faculty members, Rev. George Clark.
Emeritus Professor Dr. Robert Newman described the Taylors as “a real blessing to the seminary. I am glad to hear that she is home with the Lord.”
In recognition of their sacrificial service to Missio, the seminary has established the Thomas V. Taylor Professorship, a position currently held by New Testament Professor Mr. Stephen Taylor (no relation).
A memorial service celebrating Ruth’s life will be held on Saturday, April 23 at Hillcrest Baptist Church in Butler, PA

Theology of Power - One-day Seminar
April 23, 8:30-4:30
|
Throughout society, we have witnessed abuse of power by those in positions of authority, both inside and outside of the church. This has had devastating effects on the mission and perception of the church and its leaders, as well as on the advancement of the Kingdom of God. Our goal is to define power, analyze its abuse, the resulting trauma, and how we can use power from a Christological perspective to bless those we serve. This seminar will examine the proper understanding of power from a theological perspective, expose the common abuses of power and develop a trajectory to redeem its proper use.

Rachel McConnell has officially served as the Director of Library Services and Assistant to the President since July 2019, though she has donned other hats including encourager, supporter of many, and can always be ready to offer words of wisdom and creative solutions to help Missio run seamlessly. Mrs. McConnell will truly be missed as she and her family embark upon the next phase of their journey in California.
Shaelagh Martin will serve as the new Director of Library Services for the seminary. She is finishing her Master of Science in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. We are blessed to have Shaelagh join our team.
