Confirmation from God
A Note from President Frank James
|
|
Sometimes the Lord does something remarkable to confirm our decisions. The move to the city was not just a change of address but an enhanced opportunity to the live out the Gospel. Missio lovingly and readily embraced one of those opportunities when we were called upon by a Chinese Church to help facilitate conversations with African American pastors to deal with existing racial tensions. That call led to two subsequent meetings to explore how African American and American Asian churches can build stronger bonds. What was so profound was that the Chinese Church asked the seminary to come alongside them to assist with a difficult community issue. This is part of our missional calling as a seminary—to follow Jesus into the world.

We are pleased to announce the launch of our Diploma Program September 2, 2021. This is a non-degree program oriented to those without a college degree, particularly those seeking to establish academic equivalency criteria for potential admission to our Master’s degree programs.
Visionary Rev. Dr. Phil Ginyard helped establish this program and served as its first Director. As a young man, he matriculated in a Philadelphia diploma program that ultimately led him to earn a Master of Divinity degree from Missio Seminary in 2011 and a Doctor of Ministry degree in 2016.
Rev. Dr. Chad Hinson (DMin, 2020) is the current director of the Diploma program. His leadership skill and pastoral care expertise, coupled with his passion for providing paths forward for gifted people denied opportunity, make him a godsend for this position.

Janice DeShields is a Child Advocate Social Worker for The Defenders Association of Philadelphia. She's been a member of their team for eight years, but her work in the social services field spans more than 20 years. Janice has a heart and passion for people and knew that she was being called to provide wise counsel to those who cannot afford it. She learned of Missio’s Graduate School of Counseling from an alum, applied and was accepted.
Janice was all set to begin her studies at Missio Seminary in the fall of 2019, but in September, she was faced with a most profound struggle. Her son experienced paralysis from the waist down after being shot in the neck. As any loving parent would, Janice stepped in and became his full-time caregiver. Yet, she could still hear God’s voice that she would become a professional counselor and help people heal with the message of Christ.
When God released Janice to continue in her program, she knew that He equipped her with what she needed to effectively manage everything that came her way. When asked how she is able to do it all, Janice replies, “I have to stay at the feet of the Father for the journey, and thank God daily for using me.” Janice is slated to graduate in 2023, and is an example of being a faithful servant while following Jesus into the world.

The latest book from Professor JR Briggs
Even before the tumult of 2020, our country was experiencing a bevy of change, division, and uncertainty, both inside and outside the Church. Here’s the good news: in the shadow of our collective woundedness, we have an opportunity to partner with God in the healing process.
