The Mission Does Not Change
Just announced yesterday, March 3, the Commission on the General Conference has postponed General Conference to 2024. None of us were surprised that General Conference has for a third time been postponed and along with it our hopes of the Protocol being passed this fall. We are frustrated, second guessing the Commission of General Conference’s decision and motives. That is natural, we are humans, and conservatives have not always felt fairly treated in recent years.
Go ahead – lament, let some steam appropriately off, be frustrated, and maybe take a second lap at it.
I am not going to, as they say, “blow smoke” - This is disappointing.
But here's what I wilI tell you; the cancellation of General Conference does not change our mission. Our goal under the Lordship of Jesus Christ is to grow Methodism into a stronger church that holds fast to the authority of Scripture as the basis for growing new disciples. That is our mission and our aim is to fulfill it!
Next steps are already happening. Last weekend we had a wonderful Work Retreat that included 110 lay and clergy working together to produce good fruit that will advance our cause in local churches in many ways. The inspiring “results” will be let out in bite sized pieces over the next few months on all of our communication platforms.
So, for a moment or two, it’s human and ok to be disappointed - lament, take a walk around the block, and then, back to the mission we go together.
Much more to come, but for now, be reminded that this changes nothing in the mission we believe the Lord has deployed us to accomplish.
