EEH department selects Dr. Anna Hoover as Interim Vice Chair for Education

Our EEH department announces Dr. Anna Hoover as the new Interim Vice Chair of Education, effective November 1st, 2022, through June 20th, 2023. Dr. Hoover will have administrative responsibility for implementing the department’s education programs and serving as a chief department advocate for investment and improvement of their educational programs. Congrats, Anna!

National Partnership for Child Safety (NPCS) Highlights Progress Toward Integrating Safety Science into Child Welfare Systems

Our Center for Innovation in Population Health heads the technical assistance team for the NPCS, led by Michael Cull, PhD. Dr. Cull and his team, work with partners around the world and represent 25+ years of clinical and research experience in public child welfare, systems-theoretical approaches to critical incident review, and systems improvement.

UNITE predoctoral program welcomes 18 students

CPH welcomes alum Dr. Tim Crawford, Assistant Professor in the Departments of Family Medicine and Population and Public Health Sciences at Wright State University’s Boonshoft School of Medicine, to our EPI/BIO Lecture Series on November 3rd, 2022, at 12pm - 1pm via Zoom.

Phi Kappa Phi inducts 24 new members, including two CPH students

A total of 24 new members, including CPH students Caitlin Deffendall and Ashley Grospitch, were recently welcomed into UK's chapter of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest, largest, and most selective all-discipline honor society.

"Barriers and Facilitators to Stool-Based Screening for Colorectal Cancer Among Black Louisville Residents"Aaron Kruse-Diehr is first-author and Jerod Stapleton is co-author.


Abstract:

Knowledge of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening options remains suboptimal in Black populations, contributing to screening disparities. Guided by community-based participatory research (CBPR) principles, we partnered with five Black churches in Louisville, a region of Kentucky with high Black-white CRC screening disparities, to explore screening barriers and facilitators for CRC education and outreach.


"Differentially Methylated DNA Regions and Left Ventricular Hypertrophy in African Americans: A HyperGEN Study," Steve Claas (BST) is a co-author.


Abstract:

Left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy (LVH) is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and African Americans experience a disparate high risk of LVH. Genetic studies have identified potential candidate genes and variants related to the condition. Epigenetic modifications may continue to help unravel disease mechanisms.
