Since 1968, Latinx/Hispanic Heritage Month is observed from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. It recognizes all countries in North, Central, South America and the Caribbean, and the "X" in Latinx symbolizes and reclaims Latin Americans across the gender spectrum, but also honors some of the various indigenous peoples in the Americas, pre- and post-colonialism. Additionally, the X serves as an indicator of gender-fluidity, something challenged due to the gendered nature of the Spanish language. |
