UK celebrates Latinx Heritage Month

Until October 15th, the Martin Luther King Center at UK, along with campus and community partners, will host a variety of experiences to celebrate and amplify the richness of Latinx/Hispanic heritage and culture at UK and beyond!

Did You Know?

Since 1968, Latinx/Hispanic Heritage Month is observed from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. It recognizes all countries in North, Central, South America and the Caribbean, and the "X" in Latinx symbolizes and reclaims Latin Americans across the gender spectrum, but also honors some of the various indigenous peoples in the Americas, pre- and post-colonialism. Additionally, the X serves as an indicator of gender-fluidity, something challenged due to the gendered nature of the Spanish language.

"Detection of stage I HPV-driven oropharyngeal cancer in asymptomatic individuals in the Hamburg City Health Study using HPV16 E6 serology - A proof-of-concept study," Krystle Kuhs (EEH) is a co-author.

Abstract Background: The lack of detectable precancerous lesions poses challenges to the early detection of human papillomavirus-driven oropharyngeal cancer (HPV-OPC). Antibodies against HPV16 early proteins, especially E6, are uniquely sensitive and specific biomarkers detectable years prior to HPV-OPC diagnosis. Thus, HPV16 early protein serology warrants clinical investigation for HPV-OPC screening.
