Look at how Kentucky's natural disasters are becoming more frequent (Courier Journal)


Kentucky has seen more flood-related disaster declarations than any other state between 2000 and 2022, Pew researchers found using FEMA data. The state was second only to Oklahoma in all disaster declarations. Four charts show how Kentucky's natural disasters are becoming more common and expensive.

Dr. Sarah Vos presents at MAVC's One Health Day

Dr. Sarah Vos will present on the topic, "Preventing Misinformation Through Science Communication," at the Mid-America Veterinary Conference's (MAVC) One Health Day on Sept. 23rd, which explores how public health organizations can use social media to improve health outcomes, particularly during a public health crisis, and address misinformation. 

EPI/BIO Lecture Series: Dr. Brent Coull

Dr. Brent Coull, Professor of Biostatistics at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, is speaking at the next EPI/BIO Lecture Series, on September 22 on the topic of "Bayesian Multiple Index Models for Exposomic Research". This series is open to all students, faculty, and staff.

KyOD2A Happenings September Issue

The Kentucky Overdose Data 2 Action (KyOD2A) issue features: KIPRC's annual report on drug overdose deaths in Kentucky; a scholarship program that lets young people impacted by drug use/mental health issues express themselves through art; medication lock bags and newly created CEU training on recognizing unsafe medication storage practices; technical assistance for recovery housing operators in rural areas; and more.

Research and Publications

"Patient-Reported Pulmonary Symptoms, Exacerbations, and Management in a Cohort of Patients With Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency," Radmila Choate (EEH) is first author.


Abstract: Identifying pulmonary exacerbations in patients with alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) is critical as they are associated with disease progression and poor health-related quality of life. Not all changes in usual respiratory symptoms will be identified as exacerbations by patients with AATD.


"Impact of Socioeconomic Status on Mortality and Readmission in Patients With Heart Failure With Reduced Ejection Fraction: The ARIC Study," Anna Kucharska-Newton (EEH) is co-author.


Abstract: Background Low socioeconomic status (SES) is associated with a higher risk of heart failure (HF). The contribution of individual and neighborhood SES to the prognosis and quality of care for HF with reduced ejection fraction is not clear yet has important implications.
