Christopher Otieno is a current student in the Bachelor of Public Health program at CPH. Many students find themselves pursuing public health education and careers because they want to make an impact in creating healthier communities and helping as many people as possible. For Christopher, his motivations are remarkably similar; however, wants to add "light" to his community.

CCTS 2023 Spring Conference and College of Public Health Research Day: Call for Abstracts


Join us and the University of Kentucky's Center for Clinical and Transitional Science (CCTS) at the 18th Annual CCTS 2023 Spring Conference: "Translating Equity into Action" event at the Gatton Student Center on Monday, March 27th. This event also includes the College of Public Health Research Day, which is accepting abstract submissions. Submission deadline is Tuesday, February 21st, 2023, at 5pm.

Public Health Showcase 2023: Call for Abstracts


The Public Health Showcase 2023, sponsored by CPH, is a unique opportunity for sharing innovative work in public health research, community practice, teaching, and workforce development. This event will be held in person on Monday, April 10, 2023, at the UK Gatton Student Center. Abstract submission is open for poster presentations. Submission Deadline is Tuesday, February 14, 2023.

19th Annual TCOM Conference: "LEX GO! POP Health": Call for Proposals


Hosted by IPH-C and PRAED Foundation, the 2023 national Transformational Collaborative Outcomes Management (TCOM) Conference on October 4-6th will provide a proven platform for this field to meet up, develop their skills and share knowledge. Members of the TCOM collaborative are invited to submit proposals for review and opportunity to present at the conference. Submission deadline is March 3rd, 2023.

UK SPHA Meeting with President Eli Capilouto

Our Student Public Health Association (SPHA) group at their next Monthly Meeting hosts special guest, UK President, Dr. Eli Capilouto, on Wednesday, February 8th at 5:15 PM in the Main Building (Room 103) on campus. You're invited for a conversation about public health and leadership during a pandemic. Network and learn, and feel free to bring your questions. Valentine's Day treats will be provided. Writing Effective Conference Abstracts: Helpful Hints for Students

In this presentation "Writing Effective Conference Abstracts", all UK students are invited to learn more about helpful tips, support, and resources in order to effectively write a conference abstract in 250 words or less. Presenter is Steve Claas, Senior Research Associate in the Office of Scientific Writing. Join us on Monday, February 6th at 12:00pm - 1:00 pm in Room 115 at Research Facility #1 on campus (virtual option available). Registration is required!

Kentucky Advocacy Day 2023 at the Capitol

On February 16th, during the monthly briefing, you’ll learn everything you need to know to be prepared to ask your Kentucky legislators to support the 2023 lung health policy priorities from the American Lung Association. Using the knowledge and talking points provided, you will be ready to speak with your legislators later in the day. Registration is required!

Kentucky Occupational Health Indicators Report is now available

Every year, thousands of Kentucky workers are injured or become ill as a result of health or safety hazards at work. The Kentucky Occupational Health Indicators (OHI) Report is as an important part of monitoring occupational health and developing priorities for workplace injury and prevention. It also contains 6 Kentucky-specific OHIs.

Abstract: Highly effective treatments for cannabis use disorder (CUD) are lacking, and patient preferences have not been considered during treatment development. We therefore conducted an exploratory crowdsourced survey of individuals reporting current cannabis use and a willingness to cut down or quit their cannabis use, to determine their interest in various treatment aspects.


"Post-acute Ambulatory Care Service Use Among Patients Discharged Home after Stroke or TIA: The Cluster-randomized COMPASS Study," Anna M Kucharska-Newton is first author.


Abstract: Background and objectives: We examined transitional care management within 90 days and 1 year following discharge home among acute stroke and transient ischemic attack patients from the Comprehensive Post-Acute Stroke Services (COMPASS) Study, a cluster-randomized pragmatic trial of early supported discharge conducted in 41 hospitals (40 hospital units) in North Carolina, United States.

Abstract: The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of white spot lesions (WSL) in orthodontic patients in an academic setting. Specific aims include using a novel combination to measure plaque accumulation (PA) and detect the association between WSL and PA and the associations between multiple independent variables.


"Cross-Tailoring Integrative Alcohol and Risky Sexual Behavior Feedback for College Students: Protocol for a Hybrid Type 1 Effectiveness-Implementation Trial", Anne E Ray, Eun-Young Mun, Melissa A Lewis, Dana M Litt, Jerod L Stapleton, Lin Tan, David Buller, Zhengyang Zhou, Heather M Bush, Seth S Himelhoch.


Abstract: Underage drinking and related risky sexual behavior (RSB) are major public health concerns on United States college campuses. Although technology-delivered personalized feedback interventions are considered a best practice for individual-level campus alcohol prevention, there is room for improving the effectiveness of this approach with regard to alcohol-related RSB.

Abstract: Our objective was to describe characteristics of patients presenting with and without ischemic pain among those diagnosed with acute myocardial infarction (MI) using individual-level data from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study from 2005 to 2019.

Abstract: Cancer care delivery approaches to address financial toxicity among cancer patients are not well-established, especially in rural communities. To identify healthcare staff perspectives of financial toxicity experienced by cancer patients and to examine staff- and systems-level cancer care delivery approaches for addressing financial toxicity, with a focus on rural cancer survivors in Kentucky.
