UK SMRI researchers protecting jockey livelihoods with ‘the Graham Test’

CPH's Dr. Kimberly Tumlin, assistant professor and research director for the SMRI's Equine Athlete Initiative has developed, in collaboration, a groundbreaking jockey-specific concussion test to close the gap and fulfill some of these needs in the jockey community. "Preliminary Evaluation of a Novel Point of Care Diagnostic Device for Sports-Related Concussion," Yueming Wu 1 2Erin L Abner 2Caitlin Conley 3M Kyle Smoot 3Robert Hosey 3Kim Kaiser 3Mark A Lovell 1 2

Abstract: Visinin-like protein 1 (VILIP-1) is a neuron-specific calcium sensor protein rapidly released into blood after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and may be a suitable biomarker for identification of sports-related concussion (SRC). The objective of the study is to test if quantification of a specific post-translationally modified (ubiquitinated) form of VILIP-1 (ubVILIP-1) from a fingerstick blood sample using a point of care (POC) lateral flow device (LFD) can be used to rapidly identify athletes with SRC.

"Trends in ICD-10-CM-Coded Administrative Datasets for Injury Surveillance and Research," Julia F Costich 1Dana B Quesinberry 1Lara K Daniels 1Ashley Bush 1

Abstract: Accurate injury surveillance depends on data quality in administrative datasets created for billing and reimbursement. Significant effort has been devoted to testing the ability of candidate injury case definitions to identify injury cases accurately in these datasets. We used interviews with experienced coders, informed by a review of the current literature, to identify three clinical coding trends that may affect the consistency of surveillance data: "clinical documentation improvement or clinical documentation integrity" (CDI), coding by treating clinicians, and certain electronic health record features.

"Association of Sex and Race With Incident Peripheral Artery Disease Among Veterans With Normal Ankle-Brachial Indices," Meredith Duncan (BST) is second author.

Abstract: Reported risk of incident peripheral artery disease (PAD) by sex and race varies significantly and has not been reported in national cohorts among individuals free of baseline PAD. To evaluate the association of sex and race, as well as prevalent cardiovascular risk factors, with limb outcomes in a national cohort of people with normal baseline ankle-brachial indices (ABIs).
