25 Under 25 Spotlight
The USF Muma College of Business 25 Under 25 program recognizes outstanding students with the goal of highlighting the positive impact they have on campus as well as in the regional community and recognizing their leadership and academic achievements.

Our very own Gustavo Wengerkiewicz Storck, an undergraduate in the Supply Chain Management program, has been selected for the 2022 class of honorees. At 15, Gustavo left home in Brazil to study in the United States. The onset of the pandemic forced his return home, where he took online classes that would help with his family’s business. His father trained him to become head of buying. There he coordinated merchandise purchase orders and established new connections to overcome market shortages. It is evident that Gustavo had turned his passion into reality in 2021 when he became one of the youngest entrepreneurs to open a business during the pandemic.

We asked Gustavo some questions about his recognition and his aspirations for the future.

Q: How have your achievements benefitted the communities around you?
As USF student government executive director of marketing, my team and I communicated and created value for over 30 student government programs and initiatives, while also spotlighting key resources of the Tampa campus and helping the most amazing student-led initiatives. Some of them are the medical response unit, Safe team, counseling center, student conduct advisors, and legal and immigration aid.

While serving as director of fundraising at AMA, I have raised over $4,000 for the organization and obtained a government grant of over $5,000 that helped 20 marketing students attend our International Conference Collegiate in Chicago, in which our USF chapter placed in the top 15 among 350 other chapters.

Q: How do you believe being honored with this award will help you in your future endeavors?
As an international student, recognition like this means the world to me. It is a hard path to be an immigrant and fight for a work visa in the United States, especially while being one continent away from my family. However, I am sure that being the youngest honoree among the 25 selected is a major force that gets me closer to my dreams.

Q: What are some of your goals moving forward?
Next semester I will be AMA’s president. My goal is to guide our organization to achieve even better results with the help of all our directors and members. Furthermore, I am hoping to get involved in the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals E-Board, so I can apply all my knowledge to give back to this amazing community. I am also seeking to step up to a financial position inside student government, being a leader in the promotion of OneUSF, while developing budgets and logistics plans for university initiatives. Finally, I am also looking for possible supply chain internships.

We want to congratulate Gustavo Wengerkiewicz Storck on this recognition, and we wish him all the best in his future endeavors!

Internship Spotlights

Jack Willett

Graduation Year: Fall 2022
Internship Employer: Coca-Cola Florida
By the end of this internship, I would love to be well equipped with a strong understanding of the operations side of the supply chain. I also hope to discover what type of role I gravitate toward within the supply chain industry.
Q: How did you prepare yourself to have an internship with Coke Florida?
By participating in one of the Thursday CSCMP meetings, I was introduced to a plethora of employers including Coca-Cola. I did my research on the company and then applied. Prior to the interview, I wrote down key qualifications about myself along with some questions.
Chryslyn Souza

Graduation Year: May 2023
Internship Employer: General Motors
LinkedIn address: Click here
I am most looking forward to my project work that encompasses essential sourcing activities related to the semiconductor shortage. At my current co-op at Johnson & Johnson, I have only engaged in sourcing related to indirect materials, so I am looking forward to seeing the contrast in the direct materials space at GM.

I hope to learn more industry-specific technical skills, especially through working with ERP systems. I also want to network and foster meaningful connections with individuals at GM.

Q: How did you prepare yourself to have an internship with General Motors?
This internship was a return offer from my internship last summer with General Motors at one of their plants in Tennessee. I attribute receiving the return offer to my hard work in the Production & Material Control department. I had initially prepared to receive that internship by marketing myself very well, as my only experience consisted of a part-time job at a regular retail store and volunteer work.
Raul Lopez

Graduation Year: Spring 2023
Internship Employer: Collins Aerospace
LinkedIn address: Click here
I am looking forward to learning about the procurement process through first-hand experience. I also look forward to learning more about the aerospace industry and understanding how vital the procurement role is for a company like Collins.

I want to develop myself professionally through the enhancement of networking and negotiation skills that will influence the company I work with. I hope to walk out with a greater understanding of procurement and discover if this is a field that I will remain in.

Q: How did you prepare yourself to have an internship with Collins Aerospace?
I prepared myself for the interview by working with my brothers in Delta Sigma Pi to enhance my interview skills and develop a story for myself. I also researched Collins before my interview and matched my skills with what the position entails.
The Ozkul Report
USF’s very own Seckin Ozkul, director of the Supply Chain Innovation Lab, was recently interviewed by News 6, ABC 30 Action News, and WFTV-9 regarding the impact of aluminum shortages on canned food, beers, and other products. As the world still struggles with the pandemic, labor shortages, and a dismantled supply chain, there is also an ongoing disruption in Chinese pollution that is further impacting the production of aluminum. All these factors “basically decreased the production by approximately 10-20% worldwide,” Ozkul said.

With the expectation that the shortage will continue into 2023, companies have been hoarding aluminum and ready-made cans. Prices have additionally increased as a result, exacerbating the situation for beer drinkers and pet owners. The onset of the pandemic led to widespread adoption of “to-go” models, with the demand for canned beer skyrocketing in parallel with the increased alcohol consumption. Pet owners, on the other hand, are struggling to locate canned pet food due to the aluminum shortage and the meat backlog along the U.S-Mexico border. Ozkul added that "we don't have enough meat products that go into that cat food. And the main reason really for this is our workforce.” Luckily, he does not believe the delay in meat and other produce will continue past a few weeks as shippers are starting to get ahold of storing more products closer to consumers.

Philanthropic Donations Fuel Supply Chain Education
Our program provides student scholarships (covering tuition and textbooks) that went to our diverse student population. We’ve set a target to raise $50,000 per year for qualified scholars over the next three to five years. We provide innovative learning, teaching, and technology tools for the interactive classroom, preparing students for immediate immersion into jobs upon graduation.

Our students graduate with demonstratable skills in ERP (SAP), WMS (Datex), TMS (Mercury Gate), Supply Chain/Business Analytics (Tableau), and Lean Six Sigma (Green Belt/MS Supply Chain program) to name a few. This does not happen in a vacuum. We need support from our faithful business and industry partners to support our student's academic journey and transition into the business world. This past year, our program supported five students with scholarships through the generosity of our business partners and Monica Wooden’s gift.

The cost of high-tech innovative education is exorbitant, and this may stand in the way of some financially challenged students who find it difficult to meet tuition expectations. Our students are diverse, and this is important to our business partners, many of whom offer internships for experiential opportunities for students throughout the year. This contributes to the 99% who graduate within four years, with an average GPA of 3.4.

Philanthropic donations shoulder the burden of the joint industry/academic preparation that distinguishes the USF Supply Chain students apart from many other programs. All the money received from donations goes directly to student scholarships, student/faculty research, industry-partner engagement, and innovative education. Please help us help our students.
