Dear Monroe Falcon Community,

Happy Spring! Throughout this challenging year, our staff and students have continued to make great achievements in all areas. Our students in clubs, on sports teams, in academic competitions, and in the visual and performing arts are continuing with amazing activities and accomplishments. On Wednesday, April 7, the Board of Education held a special meeting to recognize the amazing accomplishments of some of our students and staff. The recognition shows why we are so proud of our students and staff in Monroe Township Schools. If you would like to view the presentation, it can be found on our district website.

Congratulations to all of our recipients!

Each student entering the Monroe Township Public Schools for the first time is required by law (Public law 18A:40-4) to have a physical examination prior to entry into school. This examination must be completed no more than 365 days prior to the first day of attendance. Signed documentation of the examination by the student’s physician must be submitted to the school nurse. If you have a problem complying with this health mandate, please contact your school nurse. Children without physical examinations will not be permitted to enroll.
Additionally, state law mandates that your child will not be allowed to attend school in September 2021 without proof of completed immunizations with a doctor’s signature. Information regarding immunization requirements for pupils in schools has been taken in part from the NJ Department of Health and Senior Service bulletin dated December 2000. If you have any questions regarding the immunization requirements, please contact your pediatrician or call the school nurse at the school your child will be attending. Even though all needed immunizations may not be given at the time of registration, please bring a record of those immunizations received up until that date. (New immunization information can be shared with the nurse until August 31. All immunizations should be completed by that time.)

Congratulations to Kyle DeGraw on signing

The Woodland School Student Council is sponsoring Woodland Spirit Week every week until the end of the school year!  Classrooms will choose a Spirit Theme which will be held on Fridays. We have already had Tie Dye Day, Disney Character Day and Career Day!
Our students celebrated Read Across America on March 2nd.  In 4th grade Ms. Ciccarella’s classroom did a maze and took reading oath to read their favorite books! In addition, they read The Lorax and wrote a letter to Mother Earth! As a reward, students received sunflower seeds!  Mrs. Michael also had her students read The Lorax and she had them respond by drawing & writing about a theme in connection to industry, environment & greed. Ms. Spilken had special mystery readers join her students and Mr. Reinhold / Ms. Troiani’s 5th grade class all dressed like their favorite book character. It was quite a day!

Our students continue to be recognized for Students of the Month and have been rewarded by picking a book from our book vending machine.

The Applegarth Student Council is currently holding a contactless MCFOODS Community Food Drive. The 4th and 5th graders are doing an amazing job with the collection and are eager to help feed our neighbors who are struggling during the pandemic. The two grade levels are even having a friendly competition of who can collect the most, with the winning grade having the opportunity to watch Mrs. Graziano get a pie in the face.

Mrs. Pignataro & Mrs. Nieves's Reading Class
Who thought DoorDash could be more than food delivery? Students in Room 14 at Applegarth School have been surprised with a reading award. Mrs. Pignataro and Mrs. Nieves have been delivering a balloon with a mini composition book and a scented pen for students who have logged hours on the digital platform of EPIC's reading books. So far three students have earned a gold star balloon for triple-digit hours read and twelve students earned a silver balloon for double-digits read. Besides the individual hours read, the class has read a total of over 2,800 books since September. We have enjoyed celebrating their success by watching the original Horton Hears a Who and inviting our guest speaker, Mrs. Vidolin from Florida, to read to our students. What a great week we had during Read Across America for our super 4th grade readers.

Oak Tree Celebrates Read Across America Virtually!

Oak Tree had a week-long virtual celebration to recognize Read Across America in 2021! Each student was given access to an interactive choice board which included a multitude of fun activities to participate in all week long! It ranged from designing a different cover for a book you read, writing sequels, reading by flashlight, making a fort to read a book in, creating a setting from STEM materials, cooking recipes, and much much more. Teachers also incorporated some of the activities into their lessons. Students then were able to share their photos by posting on Padlet. The participation was overwhelming.

Mrs. Dinsmore also visited classes to read aloud a digital book and March 4th was Pajama Day. While not our traditional Read Across America festivities, our school still demonstrated our love of reading!

Reading and Science “Stick Together” for Oak Tree Kindergarten Students
To celebrate Read Across America Week the kindergarten students in Mrs. Shea’s class read the beloved classic “Bartholomew and the Oobleck”. Afterwards they made predictions how they thought Oobleck would feel, smell, and look like. Next parents were asked to join in on the fun on Zoom and help their child follow directions to create Oobleck together. Reading and science began to “stick together” when the class discussed solids and liquids as they mixed cornstarch and water together. Oobleck was formed and our kindergarten students recorded their observations just like real scientists!

In an effort to show the members of our community that we care during these trying times, Barclay Brook’s School Climate Team organized a Valentine’s Day Card Drive for the residents at our local assisted living facilities. Our hope was that this small act of kindness would spread love, support, and compassion to many members of our community. We collected over 200 valentines and distributed them to two local assisted living facilities.

Barclay Brook also held a Random Acts of Kindness Week where students were encouraged to carry out acts of kindness at home, in school, and in our community. The students were able to share these acts of kindness on our school-wide Padlet page. Over the course of the week, our students and families shared over 150 acts of kindness!
