A Message From Dr. Dori Alvich
Monroe Township School District Superintendent
Dear Falcon Community,

As we enter December 2020, I am taking some time to reflect on this past year. Indeed, there have been many challenges, but I also believe we have seen some of the best in people.

  • The creativity and dedication of our staff in working with our students and finding new ways to connect in the virtual world,
  • Spending quality time with our families,
  • Supporting one another in keeping each other safe,
  • Building relationships with parents in new ways to support learning,
  • And, finding new ways to connect.

The holidays will look different this year. Instead of focusing on what we are unable to do, try to focus on what is important and creating new projects and traditions. The Whole Child Committee had put together a few activities that we hope you find enjoyable. We invite all families and staff to participate in the Falcon Families Holiday Sing-along and Family Traditions Recipe Exchange. We have also shared with you a few examples (Recipe 1, Recipe 2, and Recipe 3) of some of our families’ special holiday dishes to get your creativity flowing. We look forward to sharing the final products before winter break.

On behalf of the Monroe School District, I would like to wish each of you a happy and healthy holiday season.

Dr. Alvich

Woodland School News!
Woodland School has had a very busy school year both fully virtual and hybrid!! Our students have acclimated incredibly well in their virtual classrooms and we are so proud of them.
The Woodland School Google classroom page hosts the Pledge of Allegiance and Words of Wisdom every morning as well as other special announcements! Students have participated in many school events such as Respect Week and Spirit Week which have also been proudly displayed on the Google Woodland School Page!

Mr. Schultz, physical education teacher, has coordinated the Physical Education Virtual Challenge this year! Students who participated received a Woodland School stepper to track their mileage.  Students will walk/jog/run to many different New Jersey destinations, virtually! Our first virtual school challenge is to Six Flags Great Adventure (21.6 miles from Woodland School).  We are excited to share that 271 students are participating!
Mr. Dale, Student Council Advisor, has coordinated elections for this year’s Student Council Officers using Flipgrid. The Woodland School community will be virtually voting for this year’s officers on Friday, November 20th.
Woodland welcomed back our hybrid students week of November 16th! We were so happy to see last year’s students and meet our new students!  Ms. Hyer, Visual Arts teacher, created a wonderful bulletin board for our students to get acquainted with our staff!
Below are various grade 4 and grade 5 classrooms engaging in their in-person instruction!

Show your township spirit with this Monroe Township Falcons blanket! Support the MTHS Booster Club scholarship fund and stay warm & cozy this winter. Blankets will be ready by 12/20. Thank you!
MTHS Student Council & Key Club Food Drive

The members of Monroe Township High School’s Student Council and Key Club generously donated items to the Middlesex County Emergency Food Distribution Network. MCFOODS serves over 140 local food pantries, soup kitchens and social agencies each week. These donations will help to replenish their supply of food and ensure that all Middlesex County residents in need have access to nutritious foods and necessities.

Congratulations to the MTHS Boys Soccer team!
Oak Tree is Awarded Two Grants!

Teachers at Oak Tree School are always exploring new and innovative ways to engage their students at every level, developing critical thinking skills, igniting creativity, and allowing them to interact and have a positive experience with their classmates. Last winter staff members from our Makerspace Committee created submissions for the PPG School STEM Innovative Classroom Foundation Grants program. We recently found out that our school was awarded two grants that will enable us to purchase tools which will enhance our Makerspace and allow our students to problem solve, explore, build, collaborate with their peers, and deepen STEM knowledge while developing 21st century skills.

The first grant is being used to purchase the LEGO Educational WeDo 2.0 Core Set. Designed for primary students, the set offers students the opportunity to make abstract concepts tangible by manipulating the physical LEGO bricks. The second grant is being used to purchase 3-D Doodler pens. These tools are quite effective at our grade levels (K-3), since it does not require designing first on a computer. This allows students, even as young as 5, an opportunity to tinker, design, problem solve, and build with the technology. The possibilities are endless and the pens open a window to such diverse subjects like art, architecture, mathematics, and more. Our expected outcome is that students will be introduced to science, engineering, and computational thinking skills in an engaging and fun way.

Many thanks to the committee at PPG Aerospace for their generosity and for our Oak Tree teachers who completed the research and wrote the grants. We cannot wait for our students to be able to join together in our Makerspace and start to explore!
