A Message From Dr. Dori Alvich
Monroe Township School District Superintendent
Dear Falcon Families and Staff,

Monroe Township School District’s Whole Child Committee has been working for several years to incorporate Social Emotional Learning within our classes and schools. The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) is a trusted source for knowledge about high-quality, evidence-based social and emotional learning (SEL). CASEL supports educators and offers resources and guidance on topics related to SEL.

What is SEL?

CASEL defines SEL as “the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions.

SEL advances educational equity and excellence through authentic school-family-community partnerships to establish learning environments and experiences that feature trusting and collaborative relationships, rigorous and meaningful curriculum and instruction, and ongoing evaluation. SEL can help address various forms of inequity and empower young people and adults to co-create thriving schools and contribute to safe, healthy, and just communities.”

How are Monroe Township Schools supporting SEL?
Over the past few years, Monroe has created many practices to support wellness within our schools such as:

  • professional development for staff to teach strategies for incorporating practices within their classrooms
  • developing protocols and training staff for crisis intervention
  • developing practices within our guidance department to support all students
  • enhancing our Response to Intervention (RtI) and Multi-tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) to support individual students
  • parent education evenings
  • and many more activities.

I am proud to announce the newest additions to our resources for families: The Falcon Family Wellness Webpage and Falcon Friends: Cross-Grade-Level Socials.

The Falcon Family Wellness Webpage includes on-demand wellness for the mind and body, with creative outlets to achieve overall balance. There are many resources for parents to peruse. We will continue to add more resources so please check back often.

Falcon Friends will be holding exciting virtual social evenings for elementary students and families including game night, karaoke, scavenger hunts, Zumba and yoga stories led by our High School Falcon Friends. Please watch your email for sign up information coming soon.

Please see the attached flyer for more information on both new programs. I want to thank the Whole Child Committee, including the committee from previous years and this year’s committee, for their dedication to this important work. We are continuing to find ways to connect with our students, and more activities will be shared in the near future.
Thank you and stay well.

The following video provides general information regarding Virtual Learning through Schoology (9-12) and Google Classroom (K-8) in Monroe Township. It can be accessed on the district website in the "Announcement" section or through the direct link here.

The district has also begun to populate a Parent/Student Technology Tutorial Website. Within the website are short videos, tutorials, and resources that may be useful when using digital tools throughout the school year. The website will be updated to reflect the technology needs within our learning community. The website can be found in the "Site Shortcuts" section on each schools webpage and a direct link to the website is located here.

If you have specific technology questions please reach out to our IT staff at

Next week, Thursday, February 18th from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. the Monroe Township School District will be hosting a virtual one-hour information session focused on parental support in literacy development for parents of Special Education students. The Parent of Students in Special Education Literacy Night forum will be hosted by Meredith Alvaro. Meredith has been providing professional development support for the special education staff across the district this year.  Meredith Alvaro is a reading and distance learning expert. She provides school districts around the country with professional development on “Reading Strategies for Special Education Students” and "Maximizing Engagement Online". Meredith is warm, lovely, and very creative. We think you will enjoy this forum and hope to provide practical and user-friendly strategies to help you help your child.

This parent-support literacy forum is targeted to all grade levels, and will be recorded for those unable to attend. The final 30 minutes will be reserved for question and answer. Please use the link below to register for the event and indicate the most important topics for you.
A link to the Virtual Parent Night will be sent once we have collected all the registration information from the families.

Woodland School News!
Mr. Schultz, Physical Education Teacher, has coordinated a Physical Education Virtual Challenge for this school year. Woodland School students have completed their first two challenges to Six Flags Great Adventure (15.3 miles) and Liberty Science Center (35.4 miles). We had approximately 125 participants join this activity challenge! The goal is to provide virtual experiences while maintaining motivation and fitness benefits.  Students who participated received a Woodland School stepper to track their daily mileage. Our next location is to the Adventure Aquarium in Camden, NJ (56.2 miles).
Be inspired, stay motivated and keep fit!
This year, Oak Tree School participated in their first fundraiser of the year VIRTUALLY for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society! LLS Pennies for Patients fundraiser/Hero Squad Campaign helps blood cancer patients in our community by funding research, providing free information, financial and support services, and advocates for blood cancer patients by seeking access to quality, affordable, coordinated care. Specifically, LLS is leading a collaboration to launch a global precision medicine clinical trial to fundamentally change how pediatric cancers are treated. Third Grade Student Council Members worked on creating virtual posters to support our LLS Fundraiser, along with a video that each teacher showed to their class! We have raised about 3,500 dollars so far! Way to go Oak Tree!

During the month of December, Student Council members came up with an idea to SPREAD HOLIDAY CHEER! With everything going on in our world, and not being able to be together for the holidays, they wanted to create a special way to bring a smile to everyone’s face during this time of year. Student Council representatives created holiday cheer card templates that students, teachers, and staff used to send messages to their loved ones VIRTUALLY using Google Slides! The Oak Tree Community loved sending these cards to spread some joy and cheer this holiday season! Students and staff really enjoyed hearing from each other during our time apart!
