A Message From Dr. Dori Alvich
Monroe Township School District Superintendent

Dear School Community,

The school year is soaring with a wonderful opening of school! It was wonderful to see so many parents at the Back to School nights. Back to school is a great time to hear about your child’s classroom and learn about the teacher’s goals for the new school year.

At the September 4 th Board of Education meeting, I along with the Board and central office administration proposed our district and board goals for this school year. Board and district goals guide our budget philosophy and all of our practices throughout the year.
Board Goals are developed to guide the Board on their priorities for the next year. They are:

  • Continue to evaluate and adopt a plan for enrollment growth and facility needs

  • Encourage professional development for the Board working toward NJSBA’s Board Certification and for individual board members (Two year goal).

  • Continue to improve communication amongst the Board members.

District Goals are developed by the administration for implementation for this school year. An action plan for each of these goals is available on the district website and regular updates will occur at future board meetings. The goals for this year are:

  • Engage the school community in the development of a strategic action plan for Monroe Township School District.
  • New Jersey School Boards will partner with the district to guide this process. It will include inviting all stakeholders to be a part of the process. Please look for more information in the near future.

  • Develop a referendum project by working with the community using the latest enrollment projections to address student growth.
  • Ongoing work with the Ad Hoc committee, whose goal is to provide recommendations to the Board of Education.

  • Continue to focus on the whole child by providing resources to address the social-emotional needs of students, professional development, and cultural awareness.
  • 75 staff members are now involved in this committee. They are already working on a parent evening for November and staff training throughout the year. Social-emotional wellness will be supported by each school.

I would like to congratulate Mrs. Samantha McCloud who was appointed at Woodland School Principal at the October 3 rd meeting. Mrs. McCloud began the district as a Brookside School elementary teacher in 2006 and has worked for the last four years at assistant principal at Woodland and Mill Lake Schools. Dr. Layman, our new Assistant Superintendent, and Mrs. McCloud will ensure a smooth transition for Woodland School. We will be starting the search for Mrs. McCloud’s replacement immediately.

Communication from the district will be available through many outlets including the district website ( https://www.monroe.k12.nj.us/ ), the district Facebook page ( https://www.facebook.com/monroe.k12.nj.us/ ), and the district (@mtsdfalcons) and school Twitter accounts. Woodland School is off to a great start!

Our parents & guardians attended Back to School Night on September 24 th and had an opportunity to meet their child's teacher and see their classrooms.  The band and choir “zero-period” programs have successfully begun and the Talented & Gifted (TAG) after school programs are scheduled to start on October 2 nd .

Grade 4 & 5 Art TAG: Mondays
Grade 5 STEM: Tuesdays
Grade 5 Humanities: Wednesday

Mrs. Newcomb, school counselor, coordinated The Fish! Philosophy with our students. This program builds a supportive relationship with students and practice personal responsibility. The students are already earning “fish” tickets for going out of their way to be kind and respectful to others.

Classes will begin circulating through our STEM lab and using Cubelets, Bloxels, Dash & Dot Robotics and VR (Virtual Robotics) to name just a few.

A Woodland continues to focus on the Whole Child, Ms. Hyer, Woodland School art teacher, has created a mural for students to color, relax, manage stress and anxiety.
