February 2016

Welcome to our new Scanlan digital newsletter!

Please sit back, relax and take a few minutes to review some of the great happenings at Scanlan.  We have much to be proud of and some important alumni events scheduled in the upcoming months.

Our Class of 2016 is preparing for their home stretch with final exams, the prom and graduation only a few short months away.  Registration for the Class of 2020 will begin March 2nd and we are already 12% ahead of last year's enrollment numbers.

The Varsity Boys and Girls Basketball teams are in hot pursuit of city titles.

Our plans for the campus restoration are well under way.

Each day we are helping transform the lives of our students.

Thank you for your continued support.  None of this would be possible without your partnership.  Please stop by and visit anytime.

God bless all Crusaders!

Sincerely,

Pete Doran
Principal

SABRINA AMOH '16 - A SCANLAN CHEERLEADER MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN A LITTLE GIRL'S LIFE

When Michelle Padilla '99 told Cheerleading Coach, Sherema Fleming '99, that she was having a Cheerleading-Themed Birthday Party for her 5-year-old daughter, Serenity, excitement grew! Little Serenity loves Cheerleaders and talks about them all of the time. Therefore, it made perfect sense to have a cheerleader join her at her birthday party on Valentine's Day.

Despite any plans that she may have had for that day and the extremely frigid weather, Senior, Sabrina Amoh stepped up to the plate for her team and her school and made a grand appearance at Serenity's Birthday Party. It was an extreme delight for the little girls to take a picture with a "real cheerleader." Serenity was beyond excited as she noticed that she and Sabrina were wearing the same sneakers.  Not only did Sabrina attend the party, but she also spoke about her experiences as a Scanlan Cheerleader and presented Serenity with a birthday gift on behalf of her team. We are proud of Sabrina and her accomplishments as a student and her dedication to her cheerleading team.  We know that she will continue to
excel as she graduates from Scanlan and heads to Delaware State University to study Corporate Law.  Thank you, Sabrina, for making a difference!

Nukiya Mayo '16 - RECEIVES BASKETBALL
SCHOLARSHIP TO DIVISION I TOWSON UNIVERSITY

Senior, Nukiya Mayo who is a dominating, high-scoring player on the Scanlan Girls Varsity Basketball Team is headed to Towson University in Baltimore, Maryland.  Nukiya is not only an outstanding person and athlete, but an outstanding student who is dedicated to her studies and to her community.  We are proud of the amazing accomplishments of Nukiya and know that she will succeed both in the classroom and on the court at
Towson University.

Senior, Rachel Hall, Receives Yankees Youth Leadership Award

A new generation of volunteers were formally honored for their service to the community.  Community Board 10 recognized select Bronx youth who have stepped up to the plate.  The honorees included high school seniors
Alyssa Velazquez, Rachel Hall (pictured standing, 2nd from left), Samantha Omolaiye, Adalis Lopez and Shaquille Henry who were each awarded scholarship
checks in the amount of $750.  These youth leaders will also receive on-field
recognition during a pre-game ceremony at Yankee Stadium at one of the Bronx Bombers' games this season.

Hall, a Monsignor Scanlan High School senior, lives on White Plains Road and is the Vice President of her school's student council assisting with dances and various academic events.  Accepted into Dominican College, Hall wants to study business
management in hopes of one day opening her own real estate agency.

OUR CAMPUS
CAMPUS LANDSCAPING PROJECT BEGINS
A beautification project is underway on our 13 acre campus thanks to efforts of our Governing Board and the generosity of the Sponzilli Landscape Group who provided our school with a pro-bono landscaping plan that includes the planting of Shade Trees, Ornamental Trees and Evergreens. Phase I began during the school winter break week when Almstead Tree spent much time on our campus removing diseased and dead trees.

As we move ahead with our landscaping project, we are looking for alumni and friends who can assist us with various aspects of this project.  We are in need of trees,
equipment, topsoil, pavers, etc. If you are willing to assist us in this endeavor and/or donate product, please contact the Scanlan Alumni Office at (718) 430-0100 X58.  Click below to make a donation to our Campus Landscaping Fund!

MSGR. SCANLAN HIGH SCHOOL IN THE "IRISH VOICE"
A recent article appeared in The Irish Voice about our efforts to give motivated children in the Bronx a chance to break out of their environment and flourish. This story was written by Debbie McGoldrick who interviewed Chris Gallagher, Class of 1965 and the Governing Board Chairman, about all the exciting things that are happening here at Scanlan.

It tells the story of the revival and success of our school thanks to the tireless work of our Governing Board along with the much-needed support of our alumni and friends. All should take great pride in this story. Please take the time to read this article and pass it on to others.
