Message from the Chair
From Dr. Catherine Spong:
As March is Endometriosis Awareness Month, we wanted to share with you the highlights from our "Below the Belt" event a few weeks ago.
Led by Dr. Kim Kho, our department partnered with Endo What, an advocacy group that fights to bring awareness to endometriosis.

We invited UTSW medical students as well as local providers and nurses to attend a special screening of Below the Belt, a documentary that shines light on the millions of endometriosis sufferers that are silenced and how, by fighting back, we can improve healthcare for everyone.
According to one of our faculty endometriosis experts Dr. Kim Kho, endometriosis is an under-reported, under-discussed condition that affects 1 in 10 women – an estimated 176 million women worldwide.

It often presents as pain accompanying periods, chronic pelvic pain, or pain during sex. The condition occurs when tissue similar to endometrial tissue, which normally forms the inner lining of the uterus, grows in other places in the body – most commonly in the pelvis, on ovaries, fallopian tubes, bowel, and bladder but also sometimes in the lungs, nose, and almost every other organ.
Thank you to Dr. Kim Kho, Dr. Jessica Shields, and our team for their work on this event, for raising awareness of this disorder, and for being a part of the conversation toward solutions for sufferers.
"Below the Belt" will be airing in full on PBS in June 2023.

Clinical Highlights
Patient Story: A Focus on Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Trisomy 18
Dr. Robert Stewart and the team at MFM Plano were featured in a patient story testimony for the incredible care they provided UTSW employee, Kayla Baxter.

After a visit to the emergency room at
12-weeks pregnant, Kayla was referred to
Dr. Stewart who discovered that Kayla's son was showing signs of several birth defects including omphalocele, a condition where the intestines and organs grow outside of the body.

After several weeks of monitoring, Dr. Stewart and team discovered Kayla's son had Full Trisomy 18, a genetic condition where the 18th chromosome has three copies.
March is Trisomy Awareness Month. Despite being considered a rare condition, Trisomy comes in many different forms, like Trisomy 21 which is more commonly known as Down syndrome.

We are humbled by Kayla's willingness to share this story in her son's memory and for her outspoken advocacy for Trisomy to help bring more awareness to the condition.

To read Kayla's patient testimony in full, visit the UT Southwestern Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.
World Down Syndrome Day
Tuesday, March 21st is known as World Down Syndrome Day!

Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist and Down syndrome awareness advocate, Dr. Ashley Zink says, "Caring for families of children with Down syndrome is a big part of what we do, and I am really proud how we care for these patients and their babies -- both medically and in helping them find community with the diagnosis that they may not have expected."

Today, Dr. Zink's office will be wearing crazy socks which is the commonly accepted way of observing the day.
If you choose to celebrate bringing awareness to Down syndrome today by wearing crazy socks, share your photos to Twitter and tag us @UTSW_ObGyn!
